From a marketing point of view, this two disc set is a bit of a strange mixture. Collected here are performances by very different artists from very different dates of many but not all of Walton's truly great works. But within this set are three nearly definitive performances.
Two of them can be classed as historical. The Heifitz account of the Violin Concerto (with Walton himself accompanying) is beginning to show its age but the sound is still very acceptable. It is an exceptionally fine performance, fully in tune with the wistful side of Walton's character as well as with the fireworks. There are other excellent performances of this lovely work in the catalogue - Kennedy, Little, Bell, Ehnes - but the Heifitz is still a must have. The Piatagorsky Cello Concerto with Munch is also an exceptionally fine performance and still sounds very good. It is new to me and has quickly persuaded me to re-evaluate a work that I had previously had reservations about. It is beautifully played!
The third essential performance is the Previn account of the First Symphony. I am amongst those who feel that as an overall performance of this great symphony it has never been bettered (though the Davis live perfromance comes close for me) - it is tense and thrilling and big!
Also included in the set are the Bashmet version of the Viola Concerto - I find it just a little bit dull but other find it poetic - and an early work for piano and orchestra, the Sinfonia Concertante.
All this for less than £5!
