Although he didn't become widely known until the 1970s, Dr. John had been active in the music industry since the late '50s, when the teenager was still known as Mac Rebennack. A formidable boogie and blues pianist with a lovable growl of a voice, his most enduring achievements have fused New Orleans R&B, rock, and Mardi Gras craziness to come up with his own brand of ... This is an exceptional demonstration of how disaster relief albums should be done. Yes, Sippiana Hericane is laden with sorrow at the recent tragedy mixed with a bit of anger at those he feels made things worse. But done very well indeed without wallowing in the emotion as many artists feel the need to do.
This is a heart felt tribute to Dr. John's home town, in that unique musical style he's developed after so many years immersed in the city's culture. All the elements - story telling, excellent music, the feelings of sorrow and anger all come together into one perfect whole, with no element overpowering any of the others. All in all a fine effort which matches any of the Doctor's other albums and of which he can be justly proud.
Anyone who likes good music, well put together and with a strong message (and who want to donate money to the relief of New Orleans) should buy this excellent album.

4.0 out of 5 stars A brief pleasure... 2 Aug 2006
By Doktor Futtocks VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This isn't the Good Doctor at his absolute best, but it is still a very enjoyable listen. One star knocked off for the fact that it is such a short record. Given the cause of this record, I'm sure Mac could've found inspiration for a full-length recording. Still, it's uncharitable to quibble, seeing as it is making money for various good causes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. John doesn't dissappoint 4 Dec 2005

Had the opportunity to attend a benefit concert with Dr. John and Natalie Merchant. He shared some cuts off this new release and it is a little bit of New Orleans for everyone to share. I have also been blessed to have visited N'awlins three times and cherish the music. This release allows us to hang on to the hope that the city and music will survive.

He is a truly amazing musician.

5.0 out of 5 stars VooDoo U Do 1 Mar 2006

There's sumthin mysterious everytime I put on a Dr. John or Prof Longhair CD. Maybe it's because I am a yankee full breed, or maybe I just appreciate the style of music that comes from the Big Easy. This is not one of the good doctor's best releases, nor should it be. This album serves as a signature release of New Orleans tribute. So enjoy I did. Everyone has their style! ALSO, VISIT NEW ORLEANS! You won't be disappointed!
5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. John Shoulda Won a Grammy for This Masterpiece! 20 Feb 2013

Dr. John recorded this in the lower 9th ward after the water subsided, It's a symphonic master piece in the Duke Ellington vein. You got the water rising, people suffering, recovering and swinging back with the music providing comfort and and energitic push to survive and rebuild. The melodies and themes circle back around and weave a piece so tight I like to loop it and listen to it all day long!

2.0 out of 5 stars OK music, but the liner notes kill it for me. 11 Jan 2006
By Diogenes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Decent music on this CD - not great but OK - but the liner notes make me sorry that I bought it. The centerfold quotes lyrics by the "Reverend" Goat Carson: "...don't you dare forget me, don't you dare disappear like the barge, that rammed that levee here, DON'T YOU EVER JUSTIFY THE RACIST WAY THEY LET US DIE...". (Emphasis added.) If you're one of the silly conspiracy nuts that actually believes that evil white people purposely took steps (during Katrina and during earlier hurricanes) to increase flood damage in the black neighborhoods of New Orleans, then you won't be offended by "Goat" Carson's lyrics. If, however, you are bothered by stupidly divisive racist urban legends - legends that serve to prevent ALL Americans, black and white, from joining together to help rebuilt N.O. - then you'll reject the "centerfold" message of this CD (and won't buy it). Anyway, "Higher Ground" and "Our New Orleans" offer much better tunes, with all net proceeds going to help the folks affected by Katrina. Bless New Orleans, and all my friends there.
