Book Description

Nominated for the 2014 RONÉ “Best Indie or Small Published book of 2013 Award”. A Cornish Victorian romance set against the backdrop of the magnificent Bosvenna Estate, with eccentric rural characters and the sweeping hills of the dramatic Bodmin Moor. Janey Carhart's story is a tale of obsession, jealousy and love.

At the age of nine, Janey's younger sisters die from scarlet fever and her grief stricken mother blames Janey for their deaths. Financial difficulties and a desire to win back her mother's love, forces Janey to enter service where she quickly rises through the ranks.

Upon her arrival to the elegant Cornish Country Estate, she successfully secures a position of a lady's maid for the wealthy and powerful Brockenshaw family. An exchange of letters between Lady Brockenshaw and her son ignites Janey's interest, but Janey's feelings for this mysterious and charming gentleman soon change her life forever.

Old sins cast long shadows and not only does Janey's mother's wrath affect Janey's life, there are others whose sins risk destroying her, the people she cares about and her capacity to love again. Daniel Kellow, her neighbour, offers his help. Can she trust this man who has, it is rumoured, killed a man? Who is the real Daniel Kellow and can she trust him? Can he trust her?

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed it! 26 Aug. 2013
By Alice
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a charming read with an intelligent and intense plot. Really good for someone who wants to step away from the traditional `good vs. evil.' It is instead an intricate story with complex emotions, vivid characters, plenty of emotional suspense with some light comic relief. Janey evolves through her journey and we are right there with her. Would recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this book 9 Aug. 2013
By RBW64
I will be honest; I do know the author which gave me the opportunity to read this book prior to publication. Having said that, I do genuinely feel this book warrants a good review, despite the circumstances resulting in how I came to read it.
The author's descriptions are well done and really capture the era it is set in. The characterizations are well thought out and it is easy for the reader to understand what drives the different people in this book to do what they do, whether it's good or bad. Needless to say the bad has far reaching effects. However, don't be put off if you are looking for an easy read, this book is a page turner, with funny moments to offset the tragic times. Janey's character evolves the most in the story and we are with her through her journey. I also challenge anyone not to fall in love with Daniel.
This is a book to read with a box of chocolates, a glass of wine and a box of tissues at the ready. This may not be a literary work of art, but who cares when you find yourself enjoying a good romance at the centre of a ripping yarn set in the Victorian era.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would highly recommend this excellent book 28 Dec. 2014
The descriptive Cornish setting really brings the book to life. The author cleverly creates a modern twist to this superb Victorian novel. The reader is taken on a journey of passion, desire and courage by Janey, the lead character. The title of the book 'Old Sins Long Shadows' reflects her past and the woman she becomes. It is tantilising and heart warming with a combining contrast of trauma and tragedy. I couldn't put it down, in fact ... I'm going to read it again! I would highly recommend this excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed this book 15 July 2015
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, a real page turner. It reminded me of a Cornish Catherine Cookson at times. I particularly found the descriptions of the countryside, characters and all the goings well depicted. It's great to have a book with lovely characters and not quite so nice characters. Keep writing, I am waiting for the next book.

I truly enjoyed this read, at two stages I thought the story was coming to an end but the story continued with more twists . The author put me in mind of Cathrine Cookson .
