Like many others, especially in the UK, the only Joan Jett song I knew until last year was 'I Love Rock n Roll'. Then I saw her opening for Alice Cooper and was blown away by her music, her attitude, her on-stage persona...I always thought rock music had enough heroes and needed a heroine - and now I realise there is one, I just hadn't heard enough of her music before!
So I've been buying Joan's albums and whilst this new one perhaps doesn'r have the classic tracks like 'I Love Rock n Roll', 'Bad Reputation' and 'Crimson and Clover', it is still fantastic. If you like rock, you should like this. Tracks that stood out for me include 'Five', 'Fetish', 'Change the World' and 'ACDC'. The lyrics range between thought provoking ('Riddles' especially) a certain degree of self-examination (but not in an irritating way) and in ya face rock rebellion. And it was interesting to hear an updated version of 'A Hundred Feet Away' to compare her sound now with what it was in the early eighties.
I love this album. Joan Jett live is a phenomenon, but the album is nearly as good. If you love rock and you're looking for something just a little bit different, I highly recommend it.
