Product Description

CD Description

This new acoustic Chumbawamba album is, for the first time, a collection of songs, pure and simple. Songs with a radical voice, songs with those signature Chumbawamba four-part harmonies and catchy choruses, but songs nevertheless — songs without drum-loops or samples, without backwards cymbals or synth sequencers. Mind you, A SINGSONG AND A SCRAP won't fit too neatly into any categories, since it stands with its eight legs in different camps: traditional English music; 'unplugged' pop; choral secular music; jangly acoustic singalongs… this and that, and that and this. The album is Chumbawamba’s first release on the No Masters label and sees them joining northern-based writers and musicians such as Mike Waterson, Coope Boyes & Simpson, The Fraser Sisters and Ray Hearne in No Masters Co-operative. Tracks: Laughter In A Time Of War / William Francis / By & By / You Can (Mass Tresspass 1932) / Walking Into Battle With The Lord / When Alexander Met Emma / Fade Away (I Don’t Want To) / Bank Robber / Learning To Love / Land Of Do What You're Told / Bello Ciao / Smith & Taylor.

When i first heard this album,i thought the band had lost it! But after a few hearings,it is such an all round album. With brilliant lyrics complemented by fine musicians(as always). No real favourite track, they are all brilliant. It's so good to hear a band that always has something intellectual to sing about!!!!!

Has it come full circle for the band whose early outing were a mash-up of agit-pop folk theatre group and crass punk? Folk sensibility, the ability to tell a story and an authentic, compassionate, love and respect for the tales of the ordinary have always underpinned the work of the various versions of Chumbawamba.

This work will be no surprise for those who have known the bands work from the early days - from Danberts Unfairy Tale and back the acoutic feel has never been far from their collective hearts.

It may be a bit of a shock for the post tub thumper generation of fans - but hopefully they will appreciate the integrity and sincerity of this album. It has strength in depth, a spiritual uplifting tone and a battle cry for those of prefered bolt cropping fences to marching round in circles.

Some may think this a dramatic change for those renowned anarcho-one-hit-wonders from Leeds.... but really its just a gentle and natural evolutionary progression. Chumbas have always been interested in "music", with the "pop/dance" of Slap, the commercial rock of Tubthumping and the folk influenced Readymades.

And don't forget that Chumba have already released (twice)English Rebel Songs (and Singsong is loads better).

They have decided that folk is/has a great tradition for working class protest songs and made a great album. With lilting harmonies, great accapella
and rousing tunes this is worthwhile to any eclectic collection.

Highlights are the live favourite rabble rousing Bella Ciao (previuously only available as MP3?), the tuneful Walking into Battle with the Lord and the classic Bank Robber ( yes that one!). And the Chumba's message is still as strong as ever.

For Chumba fans this is a must. And for the growing fans of the broad folk awakening this is definitely one for you.

And is it punk? Yeaaahhhhhhhh!
