well they're not all winners 18 Mar. 2010

Neil Hamburger's comedy has targeted celebrities, 7-11s and he's even done the prank phone call thing. In this project, Hamburger does a parody of the country album. That written, "Neil Hamburger Sings Country Winners" has a higher probability of appealing to Hamburger fans rather than country listeners looking for a funny album. Sonically, the album is like a vintage country album from the 1960s or 70s. Think of Johnny Cash albums like "One Piece At A Time" and "Sings the Ballads of the True West." While the production is very charming, the content falls short. Most of the songs just aren't that funny or musically compelling. 'The Hula Maiden' is an odd take on the Hawaiian vacation. In the vein of country tunes that celebrate the workin' man, 'Three Piece Chicken Dinner' explores just how tough life can be for a comedian on the road. 'Zipper Lips Rides Again' sounds like a nod to the variety show. 'Thinkin' It Over' is about suicide. One of the strongest tunes is 'Jug Town.' In this song, the narrator celebrates his father's alcoholism. While 'Jug Town' is worth a chuckle, the grand slam is 'The Recycle Bin.' In this hilarious song, Hamburger lashes out against the strange things that people put in their recycling bins. The darkness that invades our thoughts? A sugar free birthday cake? A stillborn kitten?! By my count, the album has one great tune, a couple of goodies and the rest could go into the recycling bin.

Life sucks and Neil Hamburger is there. The Andy Kuafman-influenced debauchery that is Neil's stand-up career continues with this musical offering styled after the old celebrity `Golden Throat' records from the 60's and 70's. Only this time, its intentionally funny.

...and what musical format that can accommodate Neil's Sad Sack aura than country music....well, old country music, not the ones blasted on Monday Night Football, BGM for the latest `Blue Collar' spin-offs and Faith Hill videos. We're talking tear jerkin' Hank Williams Sr. territory...with Neil as if he was William's warm up act.

With a sharp fine band that been billed as The-Band-Too-Good-For-Neil, Neil talks, "sings" and generally belly aches his way through 10 tracks that serves as latest chapters of his life. `Three Piece Chicken Dinner', `At Least I Was Paid' `Jug Town' and `Garden Party 2' are catchy tunes supporting Neil's humorously depressing lyrics while the slower tunes `Please Ask That Clown To Stop Crying' and `The Hula Maiden' add some new twists to the country tear jerkers.

The nerves gets painfully close to the bone when Neil rants and raves in `The Recycle Bin' where he ends up swearing up a storm against where all bad entertainment material and old beer cans and newspapers eventually end up.

Well, I hope this hits country radio stations instead of the dreaded bin as beyond the comedy value, the music is well done and will stay with you way after you survive Neil's latest disastrous conquest...well, until the next one. Maybe, he'll do a classical album like Peter & The Wolf or Tommy with The Portsmith Sinforma. One can only hope!
