4.0 out of 5 stars Steve - in his element 24 Oct 2003

One of the great unsung British blues men, Steve Marriot is probably best remembered for his time with the Small Faces. He moved on to be a top-rate blues player. If you haven't heard him post-Humble Pie, give this try. The man was a born live entertainer. Listen to this, then buy Live at Dingwalls, which is even better. Great voice, great guitar, great memories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not What You Expect 1 Dec 2004
By Dr. Pangloss - Published on Amazon.com

I enjoy this album. It is definitely the work of the force and voice behind Humble Pie. If this is what you are looking for, I highly recommend it.

That being said, this CD is not the one that was released in 2000 under the title "Sing The Blues Live". I thought it was when I bought it. It has a slightly different name and very different tracks.

2.0 out of 5 stars Yeccccccccccccccccccccccchhh... 8 July 2001
By David Bradley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
You can hear a virtual reproduction of this CD--the same worn out tunes, the same asleep-on-their-feet performances, everything--by walking into any bar in America tonight at 11:30. Marriott's voice isn't particularly interesting on SING THE BLUES LIVE, everything is played at half-tempo, and the production is just atrocious. On top of all that, this album features one of the worst drumming performances in recorded history.

But SING THE BLUES LIVE may have been good enough for Marriott and the DTs, who seem to have been aiming low: according to the liner notes Marriott earned the respect of peers and critics by merging the hard rock sound of Humble Pie with vocals that "could have passed for a black R&B singer." Is this supposed to be praise? Merging the sound of a hype machine with any vocals--particularly the bad vocals on this CD--haven't earned my respect, and it won't get yours either.

(And, by the way, if you're looking for vocals that can pass as those of a black R&B singer, why not check out some black R&B singers? Rumor has it they all sound authentically black.)
