Product Description

Product Description

* An immensely enjoyable set of low-key Chicago blues, recorded in 1962 and featuring "The Honeydripper" in fine fettle.

* Sykes' backing musicians on this small-group date include the great Willie Dixon on bass, alongside renowned tenor man Sax Mallard, Lee Jackson on guitar and drummer Armand "Jump" Jackson.

* Remastered from the original stereo production masters and, being part of Ace's "Hip Pocket" series, reissued as a facsimile of the original Crown album release.

* Sykes is a genuine blues legend, with more than 35 years of recording history to his credit - very little of which is currently available on CD. This mid-priced release will therefore be welcomed as an important addition to a catalogue that deserves to be more widely heard.

By Mark Barry HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
"Sings The Blues" is part of Ace Records "HIP POCKET" series - 5" card repro sleeves of rare and iconic albums from across many genres. This November 2006 re-issue replicates that ultra-rare US-only 1962 album "Sings The Blues" on Crown Records CLP 5287. It's a proper remaster from the original analogue tapes and the sound is SUPERB - loud and clear - a typically brill job done by one of Britain's truly great re-issue labels.

The band for the album consisted of:
ROOSEVELT "The Honeydripper" SYKES on Piano
OETT "Sax" MALLARD on Saxophone
WILLIE DIXON on Upright Bass
ARMAND "Jump" JACKSON on Drums

The music is slow piano-based blues with a slight New Orleans twist on some of the tracks - a sort of harder version of Fat Domino. All songs are Sykes originals, while 2, 3 and 6 to 10 are originals co-written with JOE JOSEA - who also did the liner notes on the rear sleeve. It doesn't say who played the excellent guitar work on "Gone With The Wind", "Out On A Limb" and especially "Casual Friend" - but it's all good.

I picked up my copy from the wonderful musicshop independent SISTER RAY on Berwick Street in London for a fiver.

A nice album then - nicely presented. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darn if these aren't some good tunes. Thanks, Mr. Sykes! 3 Aug 2000

A few months ago I found this for a $1 in a used record bin. My copy is real old and on the Crown label. The record didn't list any credits or give any info about the music, but all I have to do is throw it on and listen and know that from the smile that won't leave my face, that this is Chicago style blues at it's best. I don't know the band members names, but there is an excellent electric hollowbody guitarist, a stand up bass player, and drummer accomanying Mr. Sykes on piano and vocals of course. Although I'm not a big jazz fan, the jazz leanings that this group has going sound great. Almost like the band on Tom Waits' Blue Valentine. Anyways, Roosevelt's vocals are about the best in the business and his lyrics are real clever, too. He's definitely no slouch on the piano either. By the time he recorded this, he had already been makin' records for 40 years, but this is not the work of someone who is burned out. Listening, I can't help but think that he really, truly loves playing his music.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1962 Blues Album Rarity By "The Honeydripper" Given A Great Remaster 10 July 2008

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Music - But Only 26 Minutes Of It 18 Mar 2013
By Mark Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I recently discovered Roosevelt Sykes after reading Elijah Wald's excellent book, Escaping the Delta, which details many of Robert Johnson's contemporaries who have become overlooked and forgotten while Robert Johnson, who was virtually unknown during his lifetime, has become a major figure in the history of the blues.

Roosevelt Sykes is one of those blues artists who have been largely forgotten. I have to admit I'd never heard of Roosevelt Sykes before reading Wald's book.

But during the 1930s and 1940s, Roosevelt Sykes was one of the major blues piano players. I bought a few of Sykes' 1960s albums, "Blues By Roosevelt" and "The Honeydrippers Ball" after reading Wald's book. I really liked those two albums - I've rated both of them 5 stars on Amazon - so I bought a few more Sykes albums, including this one.

This album was recorded on Chicago's Union label in 1962. The sound is good. Sykes is backed by a small band including guitar, sax, drums and bass.

The music is really good but there's only 26 minutes of it! The entire album clocks in at 26 minutes and 47 seconds.

For that reason I've reduced my rating on this CD to 4 stars. The company that has released this on CD should really go back to the vaults and see whether there are some out takes from the sessions or other additional material to fill up this CD. Perhaps releasing this as a 2 for 1 CD with another album included would be another way of marketing this CD with more than 26 minutes of music.

But releasing an album with only 26 minutes on music on it is poor marketing in this day and age. Especially with an artist like Roosevelt Sykes whose recorded output was quite prolific.

Roosevelt Sykes was a great musician and deserves more recognition that he currently has. The music on this CD is very good but there's only 26 minutes of it. The company marketing this should seriously look at better ways of marketing Roosevelt Sykes' music and raising consumer awareness of this great bluesman.
