A softer version of Bessie Smith's versions, but I love this album for that difference and for the clean, crisp, sound quality that had developed after Bessie's heyday. Lavern Baker does a really respectful homage to Bessie here. I particularly like 'Baby Doll'. I will be honest and state that I don't particularly like Lavern baker's other albums as the production on those is from a certain commercially bland period that, for me, removed the guts of what could have otherwise have been fantastic songs. This album, however, mimics the jazz/blues big, brassy, band style of Bessie Smith's time. 'Money Blues' is also a wonderful track. I would say that the version of 'Nobody Knows You when Your Down And Out' on this album is possibly the best one going ( Eric Clapton's version being the worst ). Well,,,,,,let's face it,,,,the whole album is a treat for the lug 'oles. There is a great deal of style here. If only Lavern's other albums were of this quality.

An Undiscovered Treasure! 4 Jan. 2001
By T. H VonZabern - Published on
Format: Audio CD
La Vern Baker, better known for 1950's popular songs belts out a tour de force revival of Bessie Smith Classics. She combines Bessie's warm tone with the passion and jazz know-how of Dinah Washington. The accompanying instrumentals are authentic and appropriate, and perfectly balanced with LaVern's powerful voice. Unlike so many albums, this one is all good. The only remaining mystery is, that LaVern is not better known today as a jazz/blues diva of the highest magnitude, fully entitled to her rightful place alongside Etta James, Dinah Washington, and of course, Bessie Smith.

The Queen of Rhythm and Blues 29 Aug. 2004
By Scott T. Rivers - Published on
Format: Audio CD
"LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith" (1958) is a classic performance by one of the great R&B vocalists - not to mention a triumphant reinvention of the blues queen's music. Unfortunately, the album's critical praise did not translate into huge sales. One can only speculate what direction Baker's career might have taken had the Smith tribute succeeded on a commercial level.

Jim Dandy was top 40 hit when I was a kid. I didn't really like it—too much of a ditty. But this, wow! She must have had fun doing the album; it's a lot of fun to listen to.
Great tribute to the old school 6 Nov. 2013

Good job with great back up. Excellent song selection. She achieves what the song is trying to present in a similar manor of Bessie Smith. Glad she brought Bessie back to us.

A scratch on one of the tracks of an otherwise wonderful CD. 26 Feb. 2014

La Vern Baker is fabulous and the CD is wonderful but there is a scratch on one of the tracks, which is unfortunate.
