1.0 out of 5 stars Horrendous! 3 Jan 2011
By Mark W. Kane - Published on Amazon.com

This Hallmark CD has not been remastered from anything even near resembling an original recording. In fact, it's been recorded off a very poor vinyl copy, played on a low quality turntable. One can hear pops and scratches all through the record, and as it reaches the end of each side, you can hear the sound quality decay.

To add insult to injury, it's been recorded at the wrong speed, slowing and deepening Chris' voice, so as to be rendered almost unrecognizeable.

This is a must to avoid. Spend the money and get a real import. This is my second experience with a Hallmark CD and I will never, ever spend another penny on anything they release.

So sad that someone did this to Chris.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Music, Poor Remastering 12 Sep 2010

***** for the singing and * for the quality of the CD. If you are a Chris Connor fan, this is a must since it is hard to find on CD. The bad news is that the remastering is of a very poor quality. The CD is full of scratching sounds and her singing is at times so deep that it sounds like it was recorded underwater. For the price of $4.95, it is worth getting until a better version appears.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ballards for Chris 6 Aug 2011

This CD is hard to find, in terms of quality it is okay, I didn't have the same problem that some of the other reviewers stated about the scratchy sound, however I have heard better recordings of her work. Chris seems to take her time with these songs and presents these songs in a very a very laid back style as she opens with "These Foolish Things." "Bargain Day" is also done at a milder pace making it almost sound like an entirely different song. I always enjoyed Chris' interpretations of Billy Holiday's work, and she does not disappoint with "The End Of A Love Affair", "Good Morning Heartache" and "Glad To Be Unhappy" because she always does something a little different on each recording. "Ballad Of The Sad Cafe" is sung with melancholy passionate sound that transports you to another place and time. This was my first time hearing the haunting "Something I Dreamed Last Night" but Chris always finds a a way to make an obscure song sound interesting.

A much as I enjoy Nina Simone's version of "Lilac Wine", Chris approaches the song in a different way and makes me love it just as much as Nina's; it's a very pretty song. The CD appropriately closes with "One For My Baby", a personal favorite of mine which Chris takes at a slower pace giving you the feeling that this is the last call at your favorite watering hole and once this song is over you have to go!!!

As a big fan of Chris Connor as far as her voice is concerened she can do no wrong (5+ stars, but the recording does sound a little muffled at times (2 stars). It should be mentioned that the CD does not come with any liner notes. If you are a fan and or collector of her music, unless a better recodring comes out, it wouldn't hurt to add this to your present collection. I enjoyed it and hope that you do too!
1.0 out of 5 stars amateur rip-off 27 Feb 2012

I have purchased many CD's either from or through Amazon.com and this is the very worst one I have ever heard. The CD was copied from an LP, an LP in pretty bad shape judging from the sound of it. There are multiple defects in the sound quality such as ticks, static and other unwanted background noise. Chris sounds terrible because the speed of the cheap turntable used to rip the LP to disc was not properly adjusted. A good LP that has been cared for will transfer to disc easily and with acceptable sound even with relatively cheap equipment. I do it all the time for those old lp's that no one as yet has deemed worthy to market as remastered CD's. A bad record makes a terrible CD, however, and usually Amazon.com doesn't doesn't let those slip through. This was an inexpensive item so I'm not going to bother returning it, but be warned ye old jazz collectors: stay away from this one!
