This CD is hard to find, in terms of quality it is okay, I didn't have the same problem that some of the other reviewers stated about the scratchy sound, however I have heard better recordings of her work. Chris seems to take her time with these songs and presents these songs in a very a very laid back style as she opens with "These Foolish Things." "Bargain Day" is also done at a milder pace making it almost sound like an entirely different song. I always enjoyed Chris' interpretations of Billy Holiday's work, and she does not disappoint with "The End Of A Love Affair", "Good Morning Heartache" and "Glad To Be Unhappy" because she always does something a little different on each recording. "Ballad Of The Sad Cafe" is sung with melancholy passionate sound that transports you to another place and time. This was my first time hearing the haunting "Something I Dreamed Last Night" but Chris always finds a a way to make an obscure song sound interesting.
A much as I enjoy Nina Simone's version of "Lilac Wine", Chris approaches the song in a different way and makes me love it just as much as Nina's; it's a very pretty song. The CD appropriately closes with "One For My Baby", a personal favorite of mine which Chris takes at a slower pace giving you the feeling that this is the last call at your favorite watering hole and once this song is over you have to go!!!
As a big fan of Chris Connor as far as her voice is concerened she can do no wrong (5+ stars, but the recording does sound a little muffled at times (2 stars). It should be mentioned that the CD does not come with any liner notes. If you are a fan and or collector of her music, unless a better recodring comes out, it wouldn't hurt to add this to your present collection. I enjoyed it and hope that you do too!
