Long Awaited Singles Compilation,
By Roger Grew "Roger" (Loughborough, Leicestershire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Singles (Audio CD)
At long last, a compilation CD of Unit 4+2's singles which complements the other Repertoire CD which consists of the tracks from the groups 2 LP's. Some of these tracks have never previously been available on CD and have long sionce been unavailable on Vinyl, and the two bonus tracks are completely new to the UK. It's a great mystery why this group only had 2 Top 20 hits and only 5 hits altogether. Some of their other singles deserved to do considerably better. Most of the B sides are also well worth a listen.

Good 60's melodic pop act,
This review is from: The Singles (Audio CD)
Unit 4 + 2 were 2 years behind contemporary bands during most of their career, at least soundwise. Their first records in 1964 sounded like they were made pre-Beatles, instead more like the Critters or maybe the Honeycombs. In 1966 they caught up with the typical vocal-harmonized merseybeat done by the Beatles or the Hollies around 1964. And long after "Pet sounds" and "Revolver" they became a bit more experimental. But what's the rush?
I don't care too much for the first 12 tracks or so here (except for the hit "Concrete and clay"). Pre-merseybeat-but-softer-than-rock'n'roll isn't really my thing. But the rest of it is really good. This is a good example of a mediocre group evolving into a really fine band.

Unit 4 + 2,
By J. L. H. Walkinshaw - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Singles (Audio CD)
An excellent CD. Although I have been trying for a few years to obtain a CD of Unit 4 + 2, the wait has been worthwhile. Excellent value.
