Biography

The story of how The Stranglers came into existence in the first place, is perhaps atypical of the music industry. No less surprising then, that it’s history too, is unusual. It began in 1973 and that story is both long and complex.

A lengthy discourse covering those formative days has now been covered in some considerable detail in Jet's musical odyssey elsewhere on these ... Read more in Amazon's Stranglers Store

As the title of this album alludes, these are the singles from the first few years of the group's success, before they switched labels to Epic in around 1980. The differences from the original "The Collection" release is that it does not have the tracks `Waltzinblack' and `Hanging Around'.

But what you lose in one hand, you gain in another, namely the boogie-rocker "Go Buddy Go"; the plain rocker "Straighten Out"; the angry rock-stomper "5 Minutes"; the finely-lyrical "Nuclear Device"; the laid-back "Don't Bring Harry"; the quirky "Just Like Nothing On Earth"; the equally quirky "Thrown Away"; and the fine "Let Me Introduce You To The Family".

The sleeve-notes give a concise history of the band from Chris Twomey, and I can only agree with him that, "Of the twenty singles on this CD, most have a curious timeless appeal about them. Even those that haven't aged so well retain much of their defiant charisma ... "

If you're lazy like me then this CD is essential as it avoids the usual hassle of having to attend to a greatest hits compilation for the car. Moreover, a couple of the singles never appeared on a studio album and the sleeve notes are both concise and informative. I'd almost forgotten how good the likes of '5 minutes' and 'Bear Cage' were/are. Having already amassed all the studio releases up to '10' this is worth my hard earned spare change and the 5 stars for the 2 songs mentioned alone. More or less in chronological order as well so you can see how they progressed as the years went by. Never really classed them as true punk, but they were there when it really mattered and thankfully I was luckily enough to have seen them live in their prime. If you merely want a taster this is an excellent place to start. All in all a great CD which spends a lot of time being played.

Purchased this for my nephew who is just getting into Punk/New Wave. I am an original Stranglers fan but wanted to introduce him to the "hits" rather than my collection. This album gives a good all round experience of the music of the Stranglers. Not for the die hards.
