Lost genius 5 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD
Vic Goddard was at the forefront of punk with The Subway Sect, touring with The Clash and The Slits.
There take on punk was a differant one.The blueprint for 80's indie was devised by this man (ditto Dan Treacy/Edwyn Collins).
The early singles burn the brightest on initial listen but then subsequent listens reveal further gems along the line.
The turn into swing and becoming a crooner (Holiday hymn/trouble era)is and was a bizarre delight.

Cult Artist 19 Jan 2008
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
From his shambolic beginnings as a punk Vic Godard at least improved and is today seen as a survivor from an era of pretty crude music. It would in fact have been better if he'd been on EMI-in spite of the belief that punk rock was about Indie and doing it yourself the fact is very few were actually on an Indie label. However Vic Godard WAS-it was Rough Trade.Being on this label suited an artist who only used punk as a short cut into the music business and as the Subway Sect became Jo Boxers he was making solo singles and refusing to play the "rock star game" as in his song "We oppose all rock'n'roll"-not a slight against the music but the Rock Star Lifestyle.Godard in fact showed a talent for copying the music of the 60s.
Retrospective was reissued on CD under the title "We oppose...".
By the 90s the Godard reissue program was in full swing with albums he'd made for other labels like Postcard and various compilations
An album was readied after a few singles made the Indie charts like Ambition but for some reason it was abandoned till the mid 90s when it appeared as Vic Godard: A Retrospective.
In the States Godard is virtually non existent. He'll never make much money out of the music business but the point is it probably suits him
