Biography

This Bristol trio has become one of the best trip-hop groups ever, even possibly responsible for the trip-hop genre, featuring the skills of Grant Marshall (aka Daddy Gee), Robert del Naja (3D), and Andrew Vowles (Mushroom). In 1988 they formed the creative core of Massive Attack. Three years later in 1991 their debut album Blue Lines was greeted with much acclaim. While 1994's album Protection… Read more in Amazon's Massive Attack Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Though perhaps not as relentlessly stylish as their contemporaries Underworld, Massive Attack are still easily the most influential dance-related act of the 1990s. But on this special, limited-edition boxed set, they've also got style to spare: the box itself is gloriously groovy, constructed from a heat-sensitive material that changes colour whenever somebody handles it. And then there's the music: 11 CDs, comprising 63 tracks that include album versions, B-sides and some of the best remixes around. Though the package could have fit on fewer discs--making for fewer trips to the CD player--there's ample reasons to pull the box off the shelf repeatedly: rediscovering classics like the Bond theme-ish "Sly", the relentlessly funky Brixton bass Mix of "Daydreaming" and the subversive, lustful Underdog's Angel Dust Mix of "Protection" among them. --Randy Silver

It's all very well to have such a vast array of remixes of so many superb Massive Attack singles, but it doesn't make for easy listening from start to finish. But then the dictionary doesn't make for a good read and that is how best to treat this collection; as an important reference point. Only a precious few mixes of the originals come even close in quality to the album versions. So if you are already a massive Massive Attack fan you probably own most of the singles already. And if you are fairly new to the band then do not buy this before you own the albums. That leaves this box set in no mans land really. Me...well I saw it in a second hand CD shop so parted with money to taste the Unfinished Sympathy mixes in particular. Owning and loving all the LP's I must say I was a little disappointed with the contents of this lot; fantastic in places but mainly a case of quantity over quality. You do need to be a big big fan to handle as many as 6 or 7 versions of the same track on the bounce. For completists only.

this set of cds is great, dont however buy it if you cant cope with 3 or more remixes of the same song, the remixes by famous artists like the Manics, Blur, Portishead and Underworld are a bonus. 5 Stars All Around Look at the value of it. 5 albums worth of music for the price of 3

This would be worth every penny at twice the price. Not one dud on any of the singles, even the remixes are superb, which can't always be said about remix b-sides, which are usualy just there to fill space. Massive Attack must be one of the best groups of recent history. Who says there's no original music nowadays? A classic example of letting the music do the talking (take note, Liam!), and a scandal that this stuff doesn't get the airtime it deserves.
