Product Description

‘The gun continued to be levelled at me. “Answer it...but don’t tell him I’m here or he’ll get to listen to you die.” That concentrated my mind considerably, and as I reached for my phone I came up with a plan...’

Emma Grayson was left devastated when her life was torn apart by tragedy and betrayal. Now someone believes it’s time for her to start again and puts an advert for a job through her door which leads her to the Melton Estate. Despite her desire for a solitary existence she finds herself discovering a life she could never have imagined, challenging her independence, her fears and her resistance to love.

About the Author

'A Single Step' is my first novel, and is the first book in The Grayson Trilogy. It will eventually be joined by 'Before the Dawn' and finally by 'Thicker than Water'. The titles I can manage in the time I have available at the moment, the content is proving to be a little more tricky! I love the countryside, I walk our dogs and ride horses when possible, though that hasn't been much recently as I'm currently lacking the essential ingredient of having access to a horse! Isolation appeals so the more remote the better. I struggle with towns, cities being particularly problematic, tall buildings, crowded streets, strangely claustrophobic. I enjoy writing (that's probably obvious), rewriting and editing (which is just as well), then reading a bit - quite a bit (thrillers, crime that sort of thing) before more writing and occasionally, when taking a break from writing, I get to watch a film, sometimes even making it as far as the cinema!

5.0 out of 5 stars Draws you in and hooks you tight 10 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A Single Step isn’t the sort of book I usually read, but I’m very glad I did. It’s a mystery and a romance that’s seamlessly literary and carries you along as the captivating plot unfolds. It’s a first-person narrative, my personal favourite type of novel, and the heroine, Emma Grayson is a complex person. The story starts with her having in interview for a new job, a way of making a totally fresh start after a long period of personal troubles. The new situation she finds herself in is fascinating: a huge complex farm and fine old manor house, run in a military style, where Emma’s job is to be to set up riding stables and look after the horses when they arrive. Along with her beloved dog, Suzi, Emma intends to work alone, and keep her distance from everyone. But when she meets her new kind-hearted colleagues, she finds she can’t help making friends, yet we wonder, what is happening that she doesn’t know about? What is this large farm’s business? Is it all it seems, or are there lurking mysteries under the surface, that Emma knows nothing about? Why is her new employer so interested in her unarmed combat abilities, and how has he found out all about her previous life before she even met him? And when the handsome taciturn Trent comes into her orbit she dislikes him at first, especially as his past is a total mystery that no one will talk about . . .
Emma has a lot of problems. She is recovering from her own personal tragedy and marriage break-up, and all she wants is to start afresh in her own time, in her own space. But try as she might to remain aloof and alone, she finds that she has to accept help occasionally. And she’s extremely glad of this assistance when events take more and more sinister turns until she finds herself in mortal danger. Yet who is her unknown enemy?

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down! 17 Mar 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
From the very first page I was gripped by where the storyline was going to go. It seemed obvious and in some ways I was right, but the twists and turns and unexpected events kept me reading until the small hours every night. Georgia's heartfelt descriptions of a mothers love for her child brought me to tears and made me cherish my children even more. There was a bit in the middle of the book that was a tiny bit repetitive but then WHAM off we went again on more mystery and intrigue. If you want to read a good book about country life, with an excellent storyline, brilliantly written with romance and intrigue thrown in then this is the book for you! Highly recommend. Cant wait for the next two books.

I'd like to sincerely thank author Georgia Rose for the free download of this novel via goodreads. I must admit I didn't read the synopsis prior to download as I do like a surprise read every now and then. The front cover image of this novel didn't really give any clues as to the story within, such a simple yet effective image that, to me, conjured up countless possibilities.

This novel was so easy to read, with each chapter flowing seamlessly into the next. Unlike countless other ebooks around, my ocd afflicted eye struggled to find grammatical or punctuation errors. I found the grand total of none! This alone meant a huge thumbs up for this book.

Female protagonist Emma Grayson embarks on a complete change of life as she takes a new job caring for the family horses, complete with accommodation on the sprawling country estate, of a wealthy couple. Emma is relishing the chance of some solitude with only her faithful dog Susie, and new equestrian charges, for company. The country setting is picturesque, the horses a joy to ride and care for and her cottage charming. Emma, however, is about to get a whole lot more company than she bargained for!

I found the characters likeable and well written, the story great to read and a few surprises along the way. I did find a few parts rather predictable, but this simply meant that I didn't have to think too much. A steady easy to read novel and a week thought out start to the Grayson trilogy. I'll be looking out for the second instalment. 4/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Splendid first novel 21 April 2014
By Spiro
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The previous reviews have covered all salient points: this is a true tour de force from a stylish author, IMHO. Tiny errors bob up, like the reference to a court marshall, when, I think, the phrase sought was 'court martial'. Emma is a very deep character indeed, of such intensity of feeling that I'll risk one prediction. In the next book, she'll step back now and then and give herself a good shake.

Bravo, sweet Georgia. From Spiro x

This was a very good read. The first chapter was a little hesitant but the succeeding chapters were enthralling. I enjoyed it very much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected twists 10 Feb 2014
By Freddie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It took me a few pages to get into this book but when I did I was hooked! So much so that reading on a kindle for the first time it came as a surprise when I took a breath and glanced up, that the world had fallen into nighttime without me realising as I had become so engrossed with the lives I was reading about. The end came too soon. For me, the best thing about the storyline is that as a "predictor" (and one who is usually right!) I became increasingly unsure of what was going to happen which made the book interesting to the end and whetted my appetite for the next installment. The only problem with A Single Step is believing it is the author's first book!
