In circumstances like these, normal procedures are always under pressure and often bypassed altogether, but Jack has the shadow of his predecessor hanging over him. I imagined this Irish Police Drama to be a cross between Ballykissangel and Heartbeat but far from it!
Its dark, very dark. The show revolves around Sergeant Jack Driscoll who has just moved to a remote area of
Ireland where he grew up. As you can imagine, all is not what it seems out in the Irish Countryside. Cant
see this show doing much for the Irish Tourist Board, but its still compelling viewing and the finest television
to come out of Ireland since Bally K. Looking forward to what Series 2 has in store when it starts later this month

The bleak, wild and remote west of Ireland is the scene for this outstanding series when an incoming policeman, Sergeant Jack Driscoll (superbly played by Owen McDonell) discovers the dark side of what lies beneath the surface of a close rural community where everyone knows everyone else and people do not take kindly to a new policeman digging up the past behaviour of certain folk living in the area. Driscoll takes up his post following on from his much respected father who he discovers had his own way of preserving the peace that is not always by the book and at times was downright corrupt.
The three stories in the first series tell of the crimes that Driscoll investigates and the shattering effect it has on his life and his family and how his discoveries lead to him clashing with his father when his past is uncovered. If you are looking for heart warming Irish whimsey or a tale of loveable Irish country folk this series is definately not for you. Ballykissangel it ain't but it's all the better for that.

This series was television at its very best and it loses nothing in being watched for the second or even third time. The storylines are deceptive. What appears to be gentle and mundane turns into something quite dark and sinister.
The script is first class, the scenery magic and the acting superb. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that the lead actor is a dish!

Excellent series--but PAL version has no subtitles (but NTSC version does).

Overall an excellent series. The first episode is the best. It starts a little slowly but ends with a William Trevor-ish twist to it. I thought the second episode was the weakest, though the reason I bought the series is that episode 2 has Caroline Catz in it (as the local GP and live in girlfriend of the hero during the episode). However, her role was, for the most part, extraneous to the plot, especially since she was gone by the third episode (said to have gone back to England because of the nasty winters on the west coast of Ireland).
For those who need subtitles (as I do) the PAL version does not have them even though the NTSC version does. I am mystified as to why they are not included in the PAL version.

I WAS ADVISED BY A FAMILY MEMBER TO VIEW THE ITV SECOND SERIES OF SINGLE HANDED AS THE FIRST ONE WAS EXCELLENT, WHICH I HAD NOT SEEN. ON VIEWING I AGREED THAT THE STORIES,FORMAT AND ACTING WAS VERY GOOD. SO I DECIDED TO PURCHASE THE FIRST SERIES AND CAN CONFIRM THAT THIS IS EXCELLENT, VERY GOOD VIEWING. I WOULD RECOMMEND BOTH,

Personally I think the two series' of Single Handed have been the best series on TV in a long while. The stories are gripping and together with the stunning scenery of rural Ireland, and of course Owen McDonnell's brooding good looks, well, what more could you ask for. Now that series two has ended Thursday nights just won't be the same, I ordered this series 1 DVD straight away due to withdrawal symptoms and I watched the lot in one day as was off work ill, and it cheered me up no end. I can only hope that we see another series as this quality TV does not come around too often. The acting and direction is superb, you really believe in the characters, and the writing is just brilliant. All episodes are two hours or so in duration, shown in two 1 hour episodes on TV, and they are so compelling that you can't wait for the next episode. Jack Driscoll is such a sexy character and Owen McDonnell's portrayal of Jack is perfect - please, please bring him back.

I think this series very under rated when it went out on ITV. Strong cast, excellent scripts, some great direction ( especially the Stolen Child episode ) all against the backdrop of the Connemara mountains. Nothing ground breaking, but well made, with conviction. 100% recommend.
