I have recently re-visited this book which I bought a long time ago and I will be recommending it to students on a pottery course I'm about to run, so thought I'd check to see that it was still available and in print.

This is a good introduction to the chemistry of clay, glazes and firing, put across in a practical, non-mystifying way. Whether you want to single fire pottery or are happy to stick to the two stage method of firing to bisc and then glazing, you will find what you need to know here, in an easily readable form, with tables, chemical analysis and recipes, for both stoneware and earthenware pottery. Fran makes sense of all of the additions I've been putting into my glazes for years, without my really understanding the basic principles behind them, just that I'd been taught to do it, and it worked. Now I have the understanding and am more confident to tell students why they will get better results if they do so to!

Good range of examples - I didn't know so many potters single- fired - and some very well known ones! Quickly made a range of Garden pots to try this out, and it worked! Even the wet firing.

Would have liked more recipies, but there are some, enough to get you going.
Recommended, and a good over-view of the subject.

A must have for beginners and those already more familiar with this particular method of firing.
