Crossway have been improving their bible range over recent years and the Heritage is a great example...
Pros:
- stitch-sewn binding means it opens flat almost throughout the whole bible
- line matching and clear font make a great reading experience
- comfortable size (not pocket, but not huge)
- trutone binding is decent quality - I actually prefer this now to most leather, at it seems more robust / wipeable etc...
- no cross references (in this version they want to help you read the text)
- ESV version is accurate, modern translation, good for study and thought

Cons:
- if you want cross references, this one doesn't have any!
- ESV version - some find it a bit too literal, not as "natural and flowing" as say the NIV

Thoroughly recommended.

This bible has a lovely cover, nice and supple and feels really nice in the hand. The print is really nice too. The bible is a nice size, nit to big nor small. But they ruined it for me by renaming Israel as Palestine for some reason in the maps. Editorial bias at its worst.

No frills TruTone 12 Sep 2013
By David S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Imitation Leather Verified Purchase
I chose this item after looking online for an ESV bible that was both smaller in size and yet still readable with or without glasses. While the 9-point text is easy for me to read, I also liked the simplicity of the text layout, which contains only a few references at the bottom of every other page. This is the perfect bible to just read if side notes, references, or double columns on each page distract you. Aesthetically this bible looks well above it's price range. The burgundy and brown band design looks good, however I found the brown to be more of a darker burgundy. Another surprise I found was that each page is painted with gold trimming. Overall this is a classy looking bible and I would imagine Crossway will continue to use this as a blueprint for long time to come.

A sample of the text can be found here: [...]

Fits My Hand Well 22 July 2014
By Christopher Cole - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Imitation Leather
This is a nice, hand-sized edition of the English Standard Version. It isn't a study bible, so there are no study notes. There are some translator notes at the bottom of the page. It is single-column, which I find easier to read without giant print. In addition, in the poetic sections, there is a great deal of white space around the text, which also makes reading easier. On the other hand, in the prose sections, the text comes pretty close to the edge. This gives the page a blocky, crowded look, and leaves no room for notes, if one is the sort to write notes in his bible. The cover is also very nice. The synthetic leather is flexible, with a smooth feel. The color (mine is brown with a plum band across the middle) is pleasant and attractive. There is a table of contents, but otherwise no index or concordance. The maps in the back and the translation notes are the only study aids provided.

Those with knowledge of such things tell me that the ESV translation is very close to the Greek and Hebrew. It isn't quite as literal as the NASB, but is more so than the NIV or HCSB. However, it is much more readable than the NASB, and more literary than the NIV and HCSB, both of which I find very bland.

The binding seems a little cheap, with the spine bucking when opened. But I see it is appropriate for the price. It lies flat, when opened to the middle, but tends to flop closed near the front or back. That isn't a problem for me, because I usually read in my hand, rather than lying on a table. Red text is not used in the Gospels. I think it would be best for use in church, rather than for private reading.

Great Bible--returned Thinline and Legacy versions because this is best! 7 May 2014
By JJ - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Imitation Leather Verified Purchase
I just bought this Bible and love it. The cover looks beautiful and feels wonderful (better than the ESV Thinline in Genuine Genuine Leather, which I just returned). The Bible lays open easily, except at the very beginning and the end (better than the Thinline in this regard again). The single column format is very readable, especially because the font is bigger than the ESV Personal Reference Bible and because the page is smaller so there's not quite the same quantity of text in the single column block.

The cons I see with this Bible are: 1) no concordance and 2) the pages seem a little thin--but this is a critique I have of the ESV Thinline and the ESV Legacy so it's not something any of the ESV Bibles by Crossway do better at.

I actually bought it after buying and returning both the ESV Legacy Bible and the ESV Thinline Bible in Genuine Leather, so I'll compare it to those.

The Legacy Bible is so big and bulky and has all this white space on the page. It looks like they just forgot to make the font bigger to fill up the page. The layout also has the headings in the side margins so if you're used to a normal format, the Legacy Bible is odd. Plus, the inner margins are just a little too small so the words go just a bit too far towards the center crease.

The Thinline Bible in Genuine Leather has a cover that feels really stiff and cheap. This cover feels loads better than the ESV Thinline Genuine Leather. The Thinline also has a binding that is stiff and wouldn't stay open.

Unable to read Pentateuch or New Testament comfortably 12 Feb 2014
By Peter Saechin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Imitation Leather
I really wanted to like this Bible. I still use it for school but I just forbear the issue I have with it.

It's one issue away from being a perfect Bible. I love the feel, the size, font, etc, but as mentioned in the title, the Bible does not lay flatly when I'm reading the beginning of my Bible or the end of my Bible. I thought it would go away after being broken in, but it still does not lay flat unfortunately. Since the NT is a portion that is probably most read by many Christians, this can be very frustrating to read in private and in public.

Edit - It is getting a little bit better now, but still not ideal.

wonderful bible 5 July 2013
By will - Published on Amazon.com

This is an excellent compact reading bible in the ESV. The text is large enough at 9pt. Single column and words of Christ in black make for very good reading. It is light-weight. One slight drawback - the inner margin could have been just slightly wider. You have to spread the bible open to see the inner edge well. This is not as bad in some other compact bibles I have seen. Still 5 stars. Good job Crossway.
