In her home country, Swedish pianist Anna von Hausswolff is a household name to every music lover already. `Singing from the grave' was her debut album, released in 2010, that managed to climb all the way up the Swedish charts, peaking at rank number 5. Outside of Sweden, she remains an obscure insider tip, although this could change very quick if she keeps evolving like she does right now. She describes her music as `drama-pop' or `piano-pop', and in fact that's pretty fitting. Listening to this record, obvious references to KATE BUSH or REGINA SPEKTOR spring to mind, at times also to JOANNA NEWSOM (see `The Book').

Without a doubt, the most distinguishing characteristic of this music is Anna's incredibly expressive voice. `Everyone who hears Anna von Hausswolff sing, immediately stops, listens and gets touched by her magic. Her voice is that of total impression...', says her label Kning Disk. No objections from my side. In songs as `Move on', `Track of time', Pills' or `The Book', her voice truly shines and just sweeps the listener away. At the same time, the songwriting is rather ambitious, so with repeated listens, the songs tend to grow rather than to wear off. The lyrics are... well, dark. I mean, what do you expect from an album called `Singing from the Grave'. Thankfully, however, Anna steers clear of any gothic-kitsch.

All in all, `Singing from the Grave' is a very convincing debut album that leaves the listener completely satisfied. I'd recommend this album to anybody who likes the artists mentioned above, or who is simply fond of good singer/songwriters.

Recommended tracks: `Track of time', `Pills', `Lost at sea', `The book'.
