I was led to this by a sudden surge of interest in the rules and form Welsh Verse by BBC's excellent Poetry season. This book tackles a difficult subject (how to describe a style of verse with intricate rules and structure, in another language) with grace and a lightness of touch.

It could so easily have been overbearing and strident, but manages to avoid these failings with ease. I was struck by her ability to bring across the sounds of Welsh, even though many readers will be unable to pronounce the words printed until they hear them on the CD that comes with the book. She also manages to bring in some good examples of Cynghanedd (harmony, for want of a better direct translation) in English, to illustrate in a more accessible form for English speakers. However, for all its accessible ease, it is not for the faint hearted. A book like this needs time and focus to really appreciate it.

Her purpose is unashamedly to encourage the reader to explore the Welsh language and poetry in that language. There will be many who find themselves willing to give it a try after reading this excellent introduction.

I am buying a copy for my wife who borrowed the one she currently has from a local man who was also chaired a bard and recommends this book.
My wife has found it remarkably helpful, informative and instructive (she has taken to writing welsh poetry herself and uses it in her role as a vicar).
Having worn out the borrowed copy in a very short time, I now have to buy her her own copy and I suspect I'll have to buy another one within the next year or two when this one wears out !!!
