Review

Kathleen Cheetham owns Petite Plus Patterns and in this handy book she distills her expertise for the benefit of petite-plus and plus size sewers. I don t need to remind anyone that the Big 4 does not address the style and fitting needs of this group of sewers. Just go onto Pattern Review or Stitchers Guild and you ll get sense of how big and underserved this market really is. SINGER has added its imprint to Kathleen s new book Perfect Plus, Sew a Mix-and-Match Wardobe for Plus and Petite-Plus Sizes; and Jennifer Sauer, who many of us know from her sojourn at Threads, served as technical editor; her expertise is clearly evident in the high quality technical drawings and detailed photography. But I m getting ahead of myself here, this book is not just a sewing instruction book; the first 30 pages are devoted to wardrobe planning. There is a useful questionnaire that helps to establish exactly what kind of wardrobe you need for your lifestyle based on how you spend your time and what types of clothes makes you feel good. I have to say that the design aspect of fashion sewing is to me the most challenging; that is, how to really avoid that 'happy hands and home' look and really make garments that qualify as fashion. Kathleen provides a framework for a sewer that really de-mystifies the color and fabric selection process. The actual process of sewing starts in chapter three, and included with the book is a set of tissue patterns for four garments, a blouse with cap sleeves, long sleeves and two collar variations, tailored pants, a flared skirt and a princess seam jacket. The size range in the patterns runs from petite-plus to full plus size 14 to 24. Kathleen s sloper for these patterns is a D cup with a fuller tummy, but if your measurements differ she also includes excellent instructions for all types of alterations, including a full bust adjustment. The draft of the blouse and jacket sleeve is really impressive; its a two piece sleeve drafted for full upper arms. My only quibble with this wonderful book is the style of the patters; it s on the conservative side and not even close to being fashion forward, however, I think savvy sewers will use these patterns as a base for adding style and detail. If you re an intermediate or ambitious beginner sewer looking for a basic petite-plus or plus size wardrobe this book is great sewing room resource. --Sewing Diva, April, 2009;Plan a perfect wardrobe with this super title aimed at Plus and Petite Plus sized women. Containing four patterns sized from 14 to 24 for blouse, jacket, skirt and trousers along with variations for over 50 outfits, this book provides the ultimate capsule wardrobes for casual, formal and evening wear. There is plenty of practical advice about analysing profiles, choosing colours and textures, and creating core garments on which to build a wardrobe appropriate to the wearer s lifestyle. Using herself as an example, the author shows how to develop a full collection to suit a variety of occasions and the changing seasons. There are helpful tips on altering patterns to fit along with clear diagrams and a useful measurements chart. The four patterns come complete with lots of variations for sleeves, necklines and trims making them a great basis for a multitude of styles. Assembly instructions are provided with clear photos and there are lots of extra tips for using overlockers, adding linings and achieving professional results. The final section includes a mix-and-match wardrobe to show just how versatile a few great garments can be. --isew dot co dot uk;Perfect Plus is a very straightforward book, nothing fancy. You're not going to get any couture techniques here, or anything too fashion-forward or art-to-wear. This is primarily a book for petite, plus-size women who are not fashionistas, but are frustrated --A Dress A Day dot com

I have the spiral bound book which is easy to handle and lies nice and flat if you have the book open for instruction.

There is a section a the beginning which helps you decide the lifestyle you are sewing for -
and how to chose the items for your wardrobe you will really wear.
This resonates with me as I have sewn items in the past which looked wonderful in the pattern catalogue - and nice on me - but simply didn't fit my lifestyle, so didn't get worn.
If you think buying clothes you don't wear makes you feel guilty -
it feels MUCH worse to me that I spent a lot of time making clothes I didn't wear.

Although I have long since decided on the type of clothing I actually use - this chapter would have helped me 20 years ago.
Ah well.

The paper patterns for a mix and match core wardrobe are included with the book. No tracing.
Skirt, shirt, jacket and trousers. It sounds very basic but could be very versatile with simple alterations of lengths - fabrics etc.

Being a Singer book, it includes a fantastic, detailed section on fitting the patterns to your shape.
It also deals well with all aspects of the cutting, making up, seam finishes and combinations of pieces.
If I were looking for a book for a fuller figured learner - I'd consider this a great buy.

If you are very experienced you might find it too basic.

Not sure about this book 21 Feb 2009
By Gail Rodgers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Spiral-bound
I heard about this book and put it on my wish list, then ran into a copy of it. I'm glad I did. The beginning of the book covered how to put together a coordinating wardrobe which looked like it had some interesting points. When I got into the 'meat' of the book is when I started getting diappointed. Please note this book should have been titled Perfect Plus for Petite Plus. The patterns are sized for a woman 5' 2" tall. As a plus sized woman that is 5' 10" I'm not anxious to start cutting apart and adjusting EVERY pattern piece as they would be too short. At least plus sized patterns from the regular pattern manufacturers are based on a 5' 6" woman. Huge difference.

As others have stated in their reviews, they were very disappointed in the looks of the clothes on the model (or was it the author?). I cringed when seeing the striped shirt in a full front view. The stripes on the collar weren't matched at all and so it looked like it was made by a careless sewer, either at a factory or home. I'm trying to get away from the 'dorky homemade' look in clothes, so that set my bells ringing. Assuming these were the best possible examples for the book, I wonder what all else in the book isn't made correctly. The same blouse shown without the jacket didn't look like it fit at all and had all sorts of ripples. My husband looked at the blouse and agreed with me that I wasn't being fussy, it was sewn wrong.

I commend the author on completing the daunting task of writing a book, but this book needed more prepublication work that would have had me buying the book rather than taking a pass on it.

the right book at the right time 16 Feb 2009
By S. Ness - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Spiral-bound
This is just the book for me as I'm returning to sewing after many decades. Kathleen's book is much more than an instruction manual on fitting a pattern. The chapters on evaluating your needs and designing your wardrobe could have been written with me in mind. As a recent retiree I have moved to a rural location with plans to travel several times a year. My old city work wardrobe is woefully inadequate. Kathleen walks the reader/sewer through the steps to creating a coordinated wardrobe that works for all phases of life. I'm a former teacher and find that her book reads like the ideal textbook as the instructions are clear and concise, her style is warm and supportive and the text is supported by graphics and pictures that emphasize the main points. I'm just ready to cut out my first pattern and feel confident that I can do it!

Great book even if you're not petite or plus size 17 Feb 2009
By Carole D. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Spiral-bound
I was anxious to get my hands on a copy of this book when I first read about it's publication. I have not been disappointed.

Perfect Plus is like a textbook with all the answers. It's ultimately readable, very well organized, loads of photos and diagrams (charts, too), great instructions, excellent tips, and great incentive to take four simple patterns and be creative by varying choice of fabrics, colors, etc. for a complete wardrobe. Kathleen has even provided information how to fit and flatter my non-standard body which is neither petite nor plus size.

With four patterns included, plus the wealth of information provided, this book is worth every penny!
