My Friend Quite Liked It...., 10 May 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This film gets 3 stars because of... compromise.
It didn't do much for me but my friend quite liked it; at the end she said thoughtfully "relationships are complex"... and those 3 words basically sum this movie.
The scene is set; a large man, crooner, is singing in a dance hall, on the floor there's an argument in amongst mainly middle-aged people which quickly dissipates and as that section of floor clears he sees a beautiful female in a red dress, who had been the fuse that lit argument... and from that moment on he's besotted.
Later he approaches her, he knows her friend well, gets introduced, and makes his advances but they're repellent to her, yet somehow he manages to turn it around and later they get very close...
We see them next morning; he's in the bathroom, happy; she's thinking "oh no we didn't, did we? How much did I have to drink?" He finishes what he's doing and comes out to join her, but she's grabbed her clothes and scarpered!
In case you think that was a spoiler, don't worry, it was only the first 15 mins... the rest of the movie as it unfolds is about the fragile and subtle inter-relationships that develop between different people...
It sounds interesting, but it's not, and more than that it's confusing.
I only watched it this time for the sake of the review and because my friend seemed to quite like it. The first time I tried watching I gave up after ½ hour because I couldn't bear the slowness of the whole piece; it's like a car going into first gear, and then staying there.
I kept waiting for spice, or excitement, or success, or jubilation, or passion, or anger or bust ups, walk outs, sit downs, flare ups, storm outs, put downs, pick ups or basically any real and truly recognisable emotion but alas this was all too subtle for me... but my friend... she quite liked it.
Even the ending arrived in such a way that I was left confused by what had just happened, it was at this point my friend made her solemn remark, "relationships are complex". But as I didn't want to own up to be too stupid to follow the movie I just nodded sagaciously and quietly thought, "French cinema is complex."

A realistic love story, 23 Mar 2008
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
I have watched subtitled films before but I was worried about watching one that I knew contained songs - I didn't know how easy it would be to distinguish between narrative and music. However my concerns were wasted as it was easy to follow and identify the songs as separate from the dialogue. It was that easy to follow that I was soon swept along with Alain and Marion. I spent much of the time wondering as to the relationship between the two, although he clearly was not the type of man she would usually be attracted to there was clearly something there and this is what was played out throughout the movie.
For those unclear of the plot, Alain Moreau is `The Singer', singing in a variety of clubs. In the audience one night is his friend, who coincidently is also interested in Marion. He has brought Marion, along with others, to see Moreau perform with his band. Moreau sees her in the audience and makes his way over (during his break to talk to her). From this moment the pursuit begins. Due to her devastating marriage break-up, Marion seems not at all interested but Moreau is determined not to let her slip away.
This is a gentle, caring love story. The romance is not gooey or gushy but well played and realistic. I'm unsure as to the type of viewer this film will appeal to but with three excellent stars in it, I'm sure many will get enjoyment from this. Having only just watched this before sitting down to review it, I can tell you I thoroughly enjoyed being curled up on the sofa, the fire blazing and snow coming down outside. It's a film I'd certainly watch again as I'm sure I'd see different things in it now, having watched it once using the subtitles, this time I'd be able to watch more of what was happening. No big effects but a film that instead relies on the actors to tell a wonderful story.

AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT, 2 Jan 2008
Saw this movie first at the cinema and then on DVD here in Australia (DVD rental Bigpond) and loved it, absolutely loved it, as did my husband. It doesnt matter if you arent a GD fan at all, as the themes, settings, acting and music in this movie make it an absolute delight. But he is superb in this, you are totally convinced of his part in the role. Gerard is an absolute delight.
It is one of those movies you can pull out every so often and enjoy once again and again. It wont matter how many times you had already seen it.
That's why I want my own copy. Have already got the music CD. My only disappointment is that I have to wait until the end of February for my own copy of the DVD.
Enjoy this one time and time again. Its fun, uplifting and pure joy.
