Somewhat amazingly, I was completely unware of The Free Design until a whole 35 years after they disbanded in 1973 after a fair spate of albums that almost totally failed to break through and provide them with the commercial success that so many people consider they deserved. Then the Singers Unlimited came along with their impeccable arrangements c/o Gene Puerling, spot-on harmonies and multi-tracked voices and were an instant commercial success, which must have miffed the Free Design somewhat, but such are the vagaries of fortune.

Then I heard Love You at a hi-fi show and was instantly captivated. But it was from a compilation CD-R and the owner claimed not to know who it was by, which was extremely frustrating ~ I felt like wrestling him to the floor and beating it out of him. So that seemed to be that until, by pure chance, a friend recognised it from the backdrop to a Toyota TV commercial 18 months later. A quick Google search based on What's the music from the latest Toyota commercial? revealed the answer, so from there it was a matter of identifying the original album on which it featured (I didn't want a Best Of) and thus I discovered Sing For Very Important People. This is a delighful collection of songs in the milieu of what seems to have been termed Sunshine Pop, this particular one designated as a Children's Album.

Love You is the best track, maybe their best known and admired, but the rest is pretty good too, with gorgeous vocals and harmonies from what seems to have been a family band hailing from New York.

The remastering is so good that in terms of sound quality you'd hardly guess the album was recorded as long ago as 1970. So if you want to find out what 60's and early 70's sunshine pop was all about, this is as good a place as any to start.

Beautiful and Slightly creepy 26 Oct 2008
By Kevin McCarthy - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
From its clown cover to the layered harmonies of childhood themes it is very easy in our time to consider this creepy and ironic. What makes this cd so beautiful is the fact that the band members were SINCERE in what they were doing. It is hard to wrap our post-millenial heads around the fact that the band was making beautiful music and it is totaly innocent. It is very refreshing. While there are many current art-school bands (of good merit) like Stereolab that have been influenced by Free Design, they were not poseurs, but rather excellent musicians who recorded music that on a certain level was way ahead of their time. Unfortunately there was a very limited market in the early 70's for what we would now call college radio/indie. They were trying to break into a commercial market that did not understand where they were coming from. If you are a fan of electronica or ambient, you will appreciate the soundscapes they create. Their vocals and harmonies are brilliant and will appeal to singer-songwriter types as well. This cd is a must-have for indy and twee fans as well. And for those of us that grew up in the 70's, you will lover the version of Sesame Street (and the chapstick commercials)

BEST Children's album EVER! 12 April 2010
By Darcy Meadows - Published on
Format: Audio CD
These songs are equally enjoyable for adults and children. It is sophisticated, beautiful, and fun all at once. I am so thankful my parents played this for me as a child. I am a professional choral singer now and I truly believe that the complex yet tuneful harmonies in these songs helped me develop an "ear" for music.

You will not be disappointed by this album. I am so happy I've been able to find it and listen to it again as an adult. And when I have children, they will grow up with these tunes and harmonies too.

Classic 26 Dec 2009
By Bill Your 'Free Form FM Print DJ - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Don't let the cover of this fool you. This free design album has music that will work wonders on little kids, but this is not little kids music.

Free Deisgn always had the edge on most vocal groups of the late 1960s-they had phonomonal backup bands. These singers made every great choice.

These is obviously songs geared to children, but the funk-jazz unit behind the Free Design here are so dexturous and adpet, they keep lean, bouncy grooves. If any jazz man came to me and wanted to make a heavy funk album, I'd hire this band.

This music will be a joy for you. It will also be a great gift to your kids, if you want extremely grooving ones.

While these are songs meant for children, they are performed with tight complex grown-up vocal harmonies. These songs are what any REAL musician would want their children to cut their musical teeth on. Truly, the height of sophisticated children's music.
For completists only 18 Sep 2014

For completists who have bought every other CD by the Free Design (and all but the last one, on an off-label, are highly worth it). Some repetition from other discs and the running time is even shorter than their usual records.
