5.0 out of 5 stars Late in their career but still worth a listen, 3 April 2009

(#1 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Recorded in the late fifties, these two albums come close to matching the brilliance of their earlier music, being of a very high quality. One noticeable difference here is that the musicians continue playing while the sisters are singing. In the early days, the musicians only played when the sisters paused; that was a trademark of their sound. Still, this album shows that the sisters could still sing in perfect harmony and that their infectious sense of fun was still there.

The first album featured here, The dancing 20's, includes a selection of covers of songs that the sisters would have heard in their childhood. These songs were popular at the time of their original release - a decade in which a lot of people had a good time, but which ended with a massive banking crisis. Sound familiar? Still, these songs pre-date that crisis and even the titles reflect the fun times, especially The naughty waltz, A smile will go a long long way, Last night on the back porch and Keep your skirts down Mary Ann. But all the songs here are fun songs even when it isn't obvious from the title. The standard is set by the opening track, Don't bring Lulu, which I was familiar with before I found it here, but don't remember where I originally heard it.

The second featured album, Fresh and fancy free, actually pre-dates the first album here (it was recorded a year earlier). It provides another selection of covers, this time mainly of songs that originally appeared in the thirties, but with some from the forties and one from the twenties, Tea for two, one of the most famous songs on this album and may even have been the inspiration for the Dancing 20`s album. Other famous songs here include My romance and Let there be love, but fans of oldies from the era will recognize other titles too.

Before purchasing this twofer, I'd heard all sorts of stories about the sisters' later recordings supposedly being only a shadow of their early stuff, but these two albums show that at least some of their later recordings are worth a listen. It is, of course, possible that these albums were re-issued precisely because they are the best of the later recordings, but I'm very happy with this twofer and have no hesitation in recommending it to all fans of the Andrews sisters. Of course, if you're new to their music, you might be better to start with a collection of their earlier music, but if you start with this, it will surely whet your appetite for more anyway.
