* It was in April 1960 that the Motown label issued its first official single, 'My Beloved' by the Satintones. Fitting, then, that exactly 50 years later, this unsung group of seminal Detroit doo woppers should get their long overdue moment in the spotlight.
* Titled after an album that was never released, "The Satintones Sing!" is produced with the full cooperation and encouragement of Motown's New York office, who gave the compiler, noted Motown historian Keith Hughes, access to their precious tape vault. In addition to the 13 tracks released by the group during their 1959 to 1961 existence, plus both sides of an earlier solo single by lead vocalist Chico Leverett, the set includes an incredible 11 previously unissued titles.
* This prestigious release is the second in Ace's recently launched Limited Edition series, the first of which by the Royaltones sold out almost instantly. This release is a strictly limited edition.
* The booklet contains a 5000 word essay that incorporates interviews with the four surviving Satintones, James Ellis, Chico Leverett, Bob Bateman and Sonny Sanders, the last two of whom went on to successful careers as songwriter/producers.
* A dream come true for aficionados of Motown, soul and doo wop. Don't blink, you might miss it...

SATINTONES SWING,
By
This review is from: Sing: the Complete Tamla and Motown Singles (Audio CD)
This excellent release collects together all the released tracks by Motown's Satintones, including alternate versions, and adds eleven previously unreleased tracks. The Satintones were an early super-group, stuffed with talented individuals. If you are not familiar with the group, they sound a little like The Drifters and a little like The Coasters. As well as a great collection of R&B songs, the CD contains a detailed booklet written by Motown expert Keith Hughes (one of the gentlemen behind The Complete Motown Singles) with plenty of new material on the early history of Motown gleaned from interviews with group members.
There is a limited edition of 3,000 for The Satintones Sing! so snap up a copy before it becomes an expensive collector's item.

Early Motown History,
By FMJ - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sing: the Complete Tamla and Motown Singles (Audio CD)
The first group signed to Motown. The Satintones were originally Charles "Chico" Leverett, Sonny Sanders, James Ellis, and Robert Bateman. They didn't have any hit records, so outside of Motown afficionados, they are relatively unknown. A large part of the reason they didn't have hits is because Motown was still in its infancy and didn't have national distribution and promotion in place. In fact, when the Satintones signed with Motown in 1959, Berry Gordy was still leasing his songs to other companies for distribution.
With a sound that is at times reminiscent of the Coasters, the group recorded only for two years, but two of its members went on to become well-known producers. Robert Bateman went on to produce several early Marvelettes' recordings including the megahit "Please Mr. Postman." He would eventually leave Motown and produce "Right Now, Not Later" for the Shangri-Las. Sanders would go on to become a prolific Chicago-based producer/arranger on such hits as Barbara Acklin's "Love Makes A Woman," The Artistics' "I'm Gonna Miss You," and Mary Wells' post-Motown hit "Dear Lover" just to name a few. The value in this release is not in the music itself but in that it gives us additional insight into early Motown before the well-known "Motown Sound" was defined. The liner notes nicely detail the groups history, including the role of additional members Vernon Williams and Sam Mack. It also gives us a glimpse into the operation of early Motown, and tells us about the legal controversy surrounding their release "Tomorrow and Always," an answer song to the Shirelles' "Will You Love Me Tomorrow." |
