DVD Description

In 1984, Duran Duran toured Canada and America. It was their first major tour as headliners in these 2 countries. Over 79 days they travelled approximately 18,000 miles and played 51 shows in 43 cities to over 550,000 fans. The entire tour was filmed for this behind the scenes documentary which offers some fascinating and intriguing glimpses into the fun, glamour, agony, ecstasy and ultimate glory of 3 months on the road. The band is shown thriving on the pressures, psyching themselves up pre-stage and then delivering their all to a thunderous response. The production manager, tour manager, road crew are frequently caught fraught with last minute panics and touring nerves. Hoards of hysterical fans are seen chasing down and beating on the band’s limo and with a camera placed inside the car it gives the viewer an insight into how loud and sinister that must have been. And in between all of this comes the great music. Sing Blue Silver captures the excitement and hysteria that was, and still is, the live Duran Duran experience.

Whoever came up with the idea of releasing "Sing Blue Silver" on DVD must have been reading my mind. Back in the 1980s, MTV aired this special documentary on Duran Duran's 1984 North American tour in support of their "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" LP. Today, it's now restored on DVD with 25 additional minutes of footage that wasn't shown on MTV. It's a wonderful glimpse of the band behind the scenes, and it shows the tons of work that goes into each individual show, from stage setup, to makeup to soundcheck. "Sing Blue Silver" also follows the band as they make promotional stops in America including press conferences, radio interviews, and a brief appearance on the now defunct "Friday Night Videos" in which Simon LeBon rigorously defends Duran Duran as a credible group and not some faceless boyband. We also catch them meeting members of the L.A. Raiders, brainstorming with video director Russell Mulcahy, and we also discover that keyboardist Nick Rhodes was (and probably still is) a huge fan of arcade video games. But more important, "Sing Blue Silver" catches the band in concert, performing many of their hits including "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Is There Something I Should Know," and a rousing rendition of "Careless Memories." Aside from decent sound quality and picture, "Sing Blue Silver" offers no extra features, but we do get a booklet featuring photos of the band on tour, and we get postcard-size photos of each of the members: Simon, Nick, Andy, Roger, and John. Despite the lack of extras, "Sing Blue Silver" is a dream come true for Durannies and a pretty solid documentary of the band on tour during their peak in popularity.

This is essentially a barely coherent patchwork of snippets of film recordings taken as Duran Duran undertook their 1984 US/Canada tour. Unless you're a die-hard fan, you're probably only going to watch this once or twice. The film is severely lacking any narration to convey you through a story; it just all feels a bit random. Despite that, I liked it more than the utterly pointless and irritating "Arena" film.

Some of the songs' live performances are provided in full, others are interleaved with "behind the scenes" footage that so barely scratches the surface that you wonder why they even bothered at all. You see fans crushing one another to get in first, some being in tears, if not concussed, before the concerts even began. You see clips of their chain-smoking manager expressing frustration over the telephone at others' ineptitude. You see Nick either playing video games, bitching about "the stage being dark", or brainstorming ideas on arty props (that never seem to come to fruition).

The point is made that they handled the 2-hour sets on stage OK (except for one occasion where they're extremely parched after performing in a sweatbox), but feel overwhelmed by all of the supplementary engagements, such as visiting a presentation at the FBI, where they didn't try very hard to feign interest! As the film progresses, you can't help but notice the pressure gradually taking its toll on the group.

In essence, this is a film for the "completionist". "Live in London" is a far better live performance DVD; where they finally stopped trying to be clever with concert DVDs.

No promo's here - simply a great documentary following the band round the USA. Includes many great bits of footage. The highlight is the Coca-Cola press conference where John says that he prefers Pepsi and when asked how long the lads have been playing their instruments, John answers 'I've been playing with mine since the age of 9 and Roger needs two hands for his !!!'.

The VHS got deleted pretty quick after its original release many years ago but is well worth the money. The band don't play up to the camera and the whole thing comes across as a real true to life account of the tour. Heartily Recommended.
