I have been a big fan of DSO ever since I stumbled upon Balrog Boogie one lazy evening on last.fm. I never got around to buying The Butcher's Ballroom; instead I listened to it many a time on youtube and the like. Don't get me wrong, on the whole I loved it, but there was just something missing. It was good, but it became a little dire in places and the album as a whole did not live up to Balrog Boogie.
Anyway, I preordered the limited special edition of this album over the summer, it arrived about a month ago so I've decided to give it a quick review. The album itself cannot really be faulted. It's on Spotify; I recommend you listen to it there, if you like it then buy it! Heck, just buy it anyway! You will not be disappointed. It's all here, piercing operatic vocals, the bellowing of a madman, superb cello work, groovy bass lines and songs that just make you want to dance. The group merge all styles into one brilliant album; jazz, metal, blues, eastern folk, even a bit of flamenco. Like I said, the album is brilliant, buy it. The dvd is not as good. I was expecting at least an hour or so of live footage and behind the scenes extras, as per usual on special dvd/cd combinations. Instead all there is is a disappointing 8bit rendition of Balrog Boogie and a little story (identical to the one plastered all over their myspace) with about 30s live footage. Unless you are a diehard fan, buy the single disc version of the album.

Unexpected sequel not for the faint hearted,

I have to say i am biased in that in my opinion 2006's Butchers Ballroom was one the best albums i've ever heard, spectacular musicianship combined with complicated yet very accessible melodies even your gran could love. This follow up is a strange phenomena in that it is undoubtedly a great record but contradicts the first album in being very, very inaccessible indeed for your average listener and I worry slightly for the band in that they have definately made something unique and challenging but is unlikely to win them many new converts. Vodka inferno is the standout cut and is an extraordinary thing something akin to the cardiacs on angel dust. Don't get me wrong this is a great album from an extraordinary band who really should be huge and filling stadiums but if i was their manager i would advise more melody, more Annlouice and a little less in the novelty voice department on the next outing. I was fortunate enough to see the band in London recently and it was stunning, not only did they recreate the diverse sounds of their albums but their stagecraft, humour and phenomenal musical ability and technique were truly exeptional.

...suited and booted...,

Love the name of the band, love the title of the record, love the booted and suited look. But do I like the music?
Well, yes and no. See, when I'm not being all metallic, I'm writing for a blues magazine and presenting a weekly Rockin' The Blues radio show on GRTR Radio. And I love jump blues and swing, just love it. So you'd think that mixing up the two would be right up my street. And it is. Nearly. Some of the music is absolutely outstanding. Tunes like 'A Tapdancers Dilemma', 'Bedlam Sticks' and 'Vodka Inferno' are amazing. But it's the vocals that give me problems. On the one hand, you've got the overpowering, operatic female vocals, and on the other, gruff male metal vocals. Ally that to the musical fusion of blues, swing, metal, folk, polka(!) and jazz, and it just all gets a bit too crazy. Which means it's a bit much to take at one sitting. Although everytime I play a couple of tracks in isolation, I think I want more, only to find that my palate can't take such an excess fusion of flavours. Maybe, I'm just not cultured enough for such a smorgasbord. Or maybe I'm right.
