Product Description

Agnes Bourdillon isn't the kind of woman you expect to be a nun. She is attractive, stylish, and not naturally saintly. Agnes is sent to teach at a Yorkshire boarding school, and when the art mistress goes missing, is soon on the case.

Sister Agnes is struggling with her lack of obedience to her Order and she is sent to a convent school in Yorkshire to teach French. Unfortunately there is a particularly unpleaseant murder in the vicinity and Agnes is soon curious about the effect this has on the local community as well as on Father Elias the priest at the school. Runaway and anorexic school girls complicate her life and she must deal with a friend from her own past as well as try to understand the ties which bind the close knit community outside the school. There are issues of faith and obedience to God and more worldly masters as well as the effect lies and misdeeds can have on future lives. An excellent complex mystery with far more depth and also humour than many crime novels.

Superb, engrossing. 1 April 2010

If you like your murder mysteries with a bit more depth, this is for you. Sr Agnes is a wonderful character, damaged by her previous life, wracked with doubts about her vocation. Sent away from London to Yorkshire by her order she is like a fish out of water. Once again unable to stop herself becoming involved in the tragic lives of those around her, she investigates a murder that is closely involved with the family who own the local woollen mill. She is also trying to be a teacher at a girl's school and to cope with living in community again. Highly recommended. A cut above the usual.
