Biography

Any attempts at modern comparisons don't quite get to the heart of David Ford. To find his actual peers you have to go back to some of the great curveball mavericks of melody, romance and inventiveness. Artists such as Tom Waits, Neil Young and Todd Rungren, whose haunting, harmonious melodies are frequently offset by barbed, poignant lyrics.

What a sensational solo début this is. I'm not sure what it was that happened between the break-up of low-key indie band Easyworld and the release of this album, but David's songwriting (which was pretty decent to start with) suddenly turned from good to remarkable. The whole album is a massive statement of defiance, individuality and freedom. The lyrics are raw, honest, sometimes world-weary, sometimes angry - there are a huge range of emotions on display here and they take you on an incredible internal journey throughout the whole, brilliant attention-grabbing album. This is top quality singer-songwriter fare, with a genre-defying character. You couldn't really call it rock, folk, indie or radio-friendly pop, but there are elements of all of those genres on Ford's début. It simply is what it is.

The opening song, "I Don't Care What You Call Me", remains one of my very favourite Ford compositions. It is an anthem for someone who has been emotionally beaten and bruised but it still standing upright. "State Of The Union" is an observational piece which rails and rants against the political system, about life, about love. It remains one of the most astonishing and arresting pieces that David performs live, to this day. The self-effacing "Cheer Up (You Miserable...)" starts off gently, subtly, and builds into a gloriously catchy refrain. My other picks of the album are "Katie", a rather infectious and affable song based around insecurity, and "If You Only", a beautiful song with truly lovely intentions. The final track, "Laughing Aloud" is also a superb, emotional piece of music and ends a truly brilliant album on an especially high note.

David Ford's debut album is a gem.Passionate and compelling and by turns tender and melancholy. This guy deserves to be heard and fans of David Gray and Damien Rice will love this. Equally wonderful is his second album "Songs For The Road" Check out his MySpace site for some great videos and learn to love these marvellous songs.

Why isn't David Ford a mega star. He ranks with or is above Morrison, Rice, Fretwell, Blunt, Gray and reaches the highest high. Live or studio he continues to produce plaintiff songs and delivers them with panache and class. Live in New York also shows that he can easily charm an audience with ease.....I have yet to come across one of his songs which I don't like........how rare is that?

Amazing Performer 5 Oct. 2006
By Laura Klein - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I too saw David Ford open for Amiee Mann in Fairfield,CT. and he blew me away. Love his voice and his sometimes touching, sometimes torching lyrics.

You should give him a try and see him live if you can - it is great to see one man make such a wall of sound through tight layering and looping of his own sounds.

Awesome performer ! 25 Sept. 2006

I was able to see David opening for Aimee Mann. He did an awesome performance. I got to talk to him afterwards and he is also very personable. I bought the CD and the music does remind me of David Gray, but the song "I don't care what you call me" reminds me of the Wallflowers. Bottom line, I think we will hear more of Mr. Ford.

Couldn't Get it Off My Player 8 Mar. 2007
By Andy Garrison, Actor Training Studio - Published on Amazon.com

The first single, "I Don't Care What You Call Me," is one of the best songs I've heard in ages. And the rest of the album not only hooked me fast, but has held onto me for weeks. I almost have to ration myself so I don't overplay it. Hasn't happened so far, though. I love the emotion Mr. Ford brings through his voice, melodies and especially the vocal harmonies. The entire production of this album is first rate.
