Critical response to this album has been lukewarm, at best, but it's hard to see why: this is a real firecracker, which finds the Voice and his fellow musicians on blistering form. Legend has it that Sinatra asked his arranger/conductor, Nelson Riddle, to up the tempo for all the tunes when they went into the studio to record. Whatever the truth, the effect is electrifying. Riddle's orchestra is really roaring throughout, and Sinatra never sounded more breezily commanding. Apart from a brief lull - for the melting ballad 'September in the Rain' - the pace never lets up.
Because it is so bracing (and therefore short, even with the addition of three more cracking tracks recorded at the same sessions), Swingin' Session certainly comes as a shock to the system for those accustomed to Sinatra's earlier swing albums with Riddle, "Songs for Swingin' Lovers" and "A Swingin' Affair," which are both much longer and more laid-back. But do we really all want nothing but clones or 'extensions' of Sinatra's earlier successes? I certainly don't. To me, the joy of this album is that it is so different in effect. It proves that Sinatra could swing hard and yet stay sophisticated.
Okay, so maybe "Swingin' Session" is an acquired taste; but the other way of looking at it is that it's connoisseur's stuff. It's also a whole lot of fun.

My favourite Frank album by a long way. The title says is all - "Swingin Session".

Easy, relaxed, effortless singing over same backing from a great orchestra, coming on like a pre WW2 big band.

Probably the most purely 'jazz' album Sinatra ever did, with lively arrangements and really good horn charts, giving the whole album a consistancy of mood.

The mood being classy, up-beat and really fresh sounding even today, more than 50 years after it was recorded.

Not that you'd know it was that old as the remastering is pitch perfect.

Just a final word about the voice - warm and intimate, completly on top of and inside every song. Frank sounds like he really enjoyed himself on this one.

Word of warning though - watch your speed when you play this in the car, else before you know it your racing around an empty coastal road in the south of France - and then caught on speed camera in Birmingham!

Although not as good as "Songs for swingin lovers" or "A Swingin affair" Sinatra's 3rd swing album with Nelson Riddle ( not counting "Swing easy" which was a mini LP) is still laced with some excellent music and some fierce swingin ! Sinatra's instruction to Riddle for this album was simple..keep it loud, fast and swingin and the album certainly delivers that in spades!! "Tracks like Cole Porter's "I Concentrate On You" and "Always" swing with ferocity and confidence ! Other great tracks include the fantastic mid tempo swinger "September in the rain" and "I can't believe that your in love with me" (also recorded by Dean martin and arranged slightly differently by Nelson riddle the same yr!) Sinatra also delivers a great version of "Blue Moon"

The downside of the album is that it is incredibly short with a few tracks being just about a minute and a half in length! Very welcome then that the album is extended by 3 bonus tracks recorded for the sessions but dropped from the original release. Out of the 3 extra tracks "Hidden Persuasion" is easily the best and has a great Riddle arrangement. FYI - The 3 tracks can all be found on "The complete Capitol Singles Collection" as well

The remastering is of very good quality and the liner notes are informative and interesting.

Unfortunately as of writing this review this album seems to be hard to get in the UK and only seems to be available in the U.S.

This is a truly superb album which showcases Frank Sinatra's truly unique talent. My first experience of this album was as a child, playing the mono reel to reel issue (which I still have) endlessly. This album I feel made such an impression on me that when I discovered it to be available on CD, I simply had to have it. It arrived this morning, I played it and was immediately transported forty years into the past. Talk about goose bumps! If you like Frank Sinatra, buy this album - you will not be disappointed.
