Biography

Only Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson can rival Frank Sinatra for biggest-selling solo artist of all time. His jazz-influenced singing remained internationally renowned whatever whims, fashions or innovations were introduced by new generations. In a solo career that included over 70 albums and hundreds of singles, from the late-30s until the mid-90s, Sinatra remained universally loved even as ... Read more in Amazon's Frank Sinatra Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining with subtle gems imbedded 10 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
I am an owner of almost every studio album Sinatra ever made, plus adding again the same number in various compilations and live albums. This has been a recent and pleasant addition to my collection.

This is a nice collection of songs with all the familiar commercial titles in there, however a few rare treats slipped through the net. Drinking again, The Good Life and Nothing but the best are good examples of the less common seen tracks on Sinatra compilations. All my tomorrows from the 1969 album "My Way" is a very welcomed addition as well.

The re-mastering is to a good order however songs such as "Summer wind" do sound a bit tinny as a result of the desperate attempt to boost their volume. As listeners from the original studio album will well know, this song appeared on (Strangers in The Night) and listeners will recall it did suffer from a lack of volume, and on balance "My Way: The Best Of" offers a better quality listen than this re-mastered version. But taking everything into consideration the quality is impressive.

There are more subtle treats in this albums as well. Sinatra famously started to scat at the end of "Strangers in the Night" and the mythical 16 seconds of scatting that were cut off have long been sought after on modern compilations. This album offers a very slightly extended version of that which is a joy and a refreshing version of the song. The final "bi boo boo boo ba baa" is pure Crosby inspired.

The bonus track can be criticised as being an "old man straining", to the less well read Sinatra listener; however those who have a broader depth of Sinatra listening will know that this was recorded in 1982 when Sinatra was aged 67.

5.0 out of 5 stars OLD BLUE EYES SINGING 'MANY' OF HIS VERY BEST! 19 Mar 2012
By RSProds TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Five HUGE Stars!!! The magnificent, multi-Grammy-winning Frank Sinatra is caught singing some of the FINEST popular music and jazz performances of his legendary career, many of which are the DEFINITIVE versions of these songs. Unquestionably one of the GREATEST pop and jazz singers of all time. Jazz? Yes, Sinatra started with swing bands, won many jazz polls over the years, and Count Basie's jazz band (found here twice) was one of his favorites, but he never altered his style: it just fit both categories perfectly, forcing fans in each genre to bend to his singing mastery. And by no means are these tunes ALL of "the best" Sinatra, but it contains 'many' and it arrives, remixed and remastered, on the tenth anniversary of his passing from the new Frank Sinatra Enterprises. In addition, the CD contains a previously unreleased bonus version of the classic "Body and Soul". Some versions of this CD contain a collectable postage stamp and a bonus track on the US Postal Service CD of "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" (available through your post office), and yet another contains a DVD of a live concert, so read the CD technical descriptions carefully.

Some of the 'best of the best' include a stunning, classic "Come Fly With Me", under Nelson Riddle's musical glow and Billy May's baton, with that signature string and brass intro. "The Best Is Yet to Come" is top-drawer Sinatra with Count Basie's Orchestra and his inimitable swinging piano coloring the proceedings. The seldom heard "All My Tomorrows" is pure vocal poetry in a poignant version that is somewhat different from another faster one that I heard years ago.

Format:Audio CD
This is a pleasant enough collection of his songs recorded during his Reprise label contract. It is a little bit different from other recent Reprise collections like My Way the best of. It was obviously compiled by someone who knew a bit about his work but was forced to keep it commercial. So you get all the obvious ones like New York New York but you also get Drinking Again and Moonlight Serenade.
I bought it for the DVD and although it is only 50 minutes long, and five minutes of that is Princess Grace introducing him, I still wasn't disappointed. So I'll be generous and give it four because you can't really go wrong with Frank.
