5.0 out of 5 stars Wow 16 May 2008
By TKr
Format:DVD
Suddenly is one of my all time favourite films, mainly due to Sinatra's excellent performance. Sterling Hayden is as always Sterling Hayden, not much of a surprise there. Sinatra, however, begins the film with the portrayal of a cocksure hit-man who seems to be an ice cold control freak. Throughout the film, a cat and mouse game between Hayden and Sinatra unfolds resulting in Sinatra losing his cool. The cold blooded killer, slowly and bit by bit, turns into a deranged psychopath. This is certainly one of the most impressive performances I have ever seen in my life and shows what a fine actor Sinatra was. All in all, it's a fairly unspectacular B movie with not much of a story that turns into a nail bitingly exciting game of life and death between the two men. A must see.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 very old (young) Sinatra movies 24 Aug 2012
By Chris Morse VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wasn't really sure what to expect from these 2 movies. They are both very old with what must be some of Sinatra's earliest performances (I don't know this, I'm guessing). They are both marked as well by being slightly controversial. Suddenly was apparently withdrawn at Sinatra's bidding once he'd found out Lee Harvey Oswald had watched it before assassinating Kennedy (Suddenly is about a Presidential assassination attempt), and The Man With The Golden Arm didn't have a rating (I don't know how that happens) due to it's drug related content.
Despite my initial worry that these may just be Sinatra fodder films sold to make a quick buck I needn't have worried. Both films really are superb, and in both Sinatra shows what a great actor he was. His portrayal of a drug addict reminded me so much of Trainspotting it must have blown the audiences minds away with what it means to be an addict. He is such an intense actor you really get sucked into his world in both movies.
I've always thought of Sinatra in much the same way as Elvis when it comes to movies, just something else he did to broaden his fame, but I have changed that opinion after these films, he really was a great actor...who also happened to be a great singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 30 Aug 2010
By IanL
Format:DVD
The man with the golden arm is an excellent greek-like drama set in modern times, one of the most recommendable ones.
The characters are well portrayed by an excellent cast and the plot gripping almost to the end.
Frank Sinatra plays remarkably the role of an (ex-)drug addict who attempts to start a new life. However he must first try to escape from his past one... which slowly drags him back in to his old demons.
Even if the end is a bit foreseable with a last "Coup de théatre" and a kind of happy ending I rate this film as 5 stars
