A lovely record if it were just 7 songs long!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sinatra and Company (Audio CD)
This is referring to the first 7 songs because, frankly I'm not even going to talk about the second 7! That said, this album is a wonderful demonstration of the sort of sublime music-making Sinatra could achieve (with the right collaborators and the right music ),and the sort of unmusical nothingness he all-too often slipped into at this late stage in his career. He teams up with Eumir Deodato, who puts out some wonderful arrangements matched only by the beautiful melodies he was arranging (the harmonic range he covers is breathtaking and only goes to highlight his later success as a producer for other big acts like Earth Wind and Fire,Kool and the gang,Robera Flack even Bjork!) Again, as with the wonderful Sinatra /Jobim collaboration a few years earlier Sinatra shows just what a gift he had for singing these gems and why it was even more criminal he was wasting away singing bilge like "You can drink the water and I will drink the wine" or singing about what he did "his way", no matter how awful the song! His vocals are waning badly at this time (and they never got any better) yet he still manages to find the control and the stamina to sing in an oh so hushed way that lends itself beautifully to these songs.Just listen to his phrasing, and then just try singing along with him! This was his last great effort and we should be thankful for it ('Someone to light up my life' has moved me virtually to tears too many times to remember such is the perfection of the song, his singing and Deodato's arrangement),as for the rest, well,'Close to you' is nicely done but buy this album for the first 7 songs alone.....I did!

Sinatra & Jobim... a perfect couple again....,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sinatra and Company (Audio CD)
Unfortunately Sinatra never issued the second album he made with A.C. Jobim. Ten songs were recorded, but for some reason this album (for wich the cover already was made ! ) Sinatra&Jobim never made it into the shop. So eventually Reprise put 7 songs of the session on this set. And again like on the first session with Jobim, they're all wonderfull, i especially love Aqua de Beber, the other 7 songs are songs arranged by Don Costa. These songs are unmemorable kiddie-pop numbers, but i like Leaving On A Jetplane better than the original by John Denver. If you liked the first Sinatra & Jobim album, you won't regret buying this one !

SINATRA'S FAREWELL....TILL THE NEXT TIME.....,
By ROMAN (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: SINATRA & COMPANY (Audio CD)
THIS 1971 ALBUM FROM FRANK SINATRA IS A BIT OF A MIXED BAG. THE PROJECT WAS ORIGINALLY SUPPOSED TO BE A SECOND ALBUM OF JOBIM SONGS TO COMPLEMENT THE CELEBRATED 1967 ALBUM 'FRANCIS ALBERT SINATRA AND ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM' BUT INSTEAD IT TURNED INTO AN ALBUM OF TWO HALVES, SIDE A CONSISTING OF JOBIM PENNED MATERIAL SUCH AS 'DRINKING WATER', 'TRISTE', 'WAVE' AND 'ONE NOTE SAMBA' AND SIDE B A SET OF POP SONGS. SIDE A WINS OUT BECAUSE OF THE SUPERIORITY OF THE MATERIAL AND THOUGH MR SINATRA'S VOCAL TIMBRE HAD CHANGED FROM THE EARLIER JOBIM LP, HE STILL PERFORMS THE SONGS WITH AUTHORITATIVE SPLENDOUR. 'B' SIDE IS LESS CONSISTENT WITH SOME LESSER MATERIAL HOWEVER THERE ARE STILL FINE VERSIONS OF 'I WILL DRINK THE WINE' (A BIG SELLER AS A SINGLE IN UK), 'BEIN' GREEN' AND JOHN DENVER'S LOVELY 'MY SWEET LADY'.
INCONGRUOUSLY, THE ALBUM FINISHES WITH A STANDOUT TRIBUTE TO BILLIE HOLIDAY, NAMELY 'LADY DAY' WHERE WE HEAR AN EMOTIONAL AND GUTSY SINATRA PERFORMANCE WHICH MAKES YOU WISH THERE WERE MORE SUCH ITEMS ON THE ALBUM. WHATEVER,THIS HAD TO SUFFICE TILL THE 1973 COMEBACK AND AS SUCH, IS CERTAINLY WORTH LISTENING TO.
