5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets 26 Jan 2007
Format:Audio CD
You can't get better than this, originally a double LP, now released on a single CD. There is is no recording date on the CD but the LP was released in September 1966, and Sinatra references his own 50th year during the concert ("I think I better sing before I turn 51"), so it was undoubtably recorded in 1966. This means Sinatra was still in peak form at the time.

The great Count Basie Orchestra launches the show and then Sinatra enters saying "How did all these people get in my room"! The Basie Orchestra is fabulous providing the sort of backing that Sinatra should have used more in his career. They do a couple of instrumentals the best of which is "All of me" where I imagine most of the room jumped out of its skin when after a typical minimilist Piano statement of the tune the band enters unexpectedly with a fantastic crescendo chord.

Sinatra is amazing, and there are so many great moments on this disc that its hard to pick out favourites in a short review. However I'll pick two, the swinging version of "Get me to the church on time" and "You make me feel so young". These two tracks alone demonstrate that the man had everything you could wish from a great singer. Beautiful phrasing, immaculate timing and an ability to hold an audience that few others have matched.

There are 21 tracks on the CD, including a couple of monologues from Sinatra which are the two weakest tracks. The arranger and conducter is Quincy Jones, so no loss of quality on that front. This is an absolutely essential purchase for anybody interested in good music regardless of genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sinatra doing what he did best....... 3 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Singing live! I initially chose this particular Cd version because I stayed at the Sands when I was in Las Vegas. I thought that all the songs of his that we know and love are all the same so whichever CD I chose it wouldn't matter. Wrong! This CD evokes all the atmosphere of a smokey jazz club and the smoothness of Sinatra. He is evidently enjoying himself singing with the classy Bassie orchestration adn the monologues show you his humorous side.
This is the second time I have bought this CD as I have given the first ones to friends from Europe who loved it so much they took it home with them! If there is one Frank Sinatra CD you are intending to buy give this one a chance - you won't regret it. I'll bet you'll be singing along and dancing round your living room in no time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your normal live recording.. 31 Jan 2006
Format:Audio CD
I dont normally rave about live albums, firstly the sound quality can be variable, and most importantly they never really capture the spirit of a live performance.
Unfortunately I wasn't born when this was recorded, but it captures a wonderful ambiance from the recording, and one area where Sinatra and the Band really scores, is the fact that they are all supreme musicians, and their performance on the night is exemplary.
I have some Sinatra studio recordings, but I would much rather listen to this, if you only ever buy one Sinatra album, or even only ever buy one live recording, let it be this one.
It is that great..

5.0 out of 5 stars Frank and the "Count" 20 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
This album is one of the best if not the best live albums I own. The show has superb reviews already and that goes without saying. I give it five stars not only for the performance but also the recording. If you turn it up loud and shut your eyes you can imagine the "Sands" with the slight crowd noise and odd "chinking" of the glasses in the audience and really feel and almost see that you are right in the middle of the auditorium with this fantastic band in front of you along with the worlds greatest singer - it's that good!

Probably the best Sinatra/Basie album available.

Sinatra was at the top and with the fantastic basie band at their peak.

Every fan should have this album

5.0 out of 5 stars i don't often give 5 stars 12 Dec 2005
Format:Audio CD
but i really can't fault this album. the band is phenomenal - some marvellous solo work as well as great accompanying and some moments of comedy interacting with frank. which brings us on to frank. i may sound like a grumpy old man (grumpy i may be, but i'm not old) but i can't think of any singer of today's crop who could get near the consistent level of sinatra's swinging, phrasing, interaction with the audience, and sheer beauty of voice. he seems to do no wrong, and some of the versions are at variance with the recorded ones, and all the better for that. to hear him introduce 'the shadow of your smile' as 'a new song' shows just how modern frank still sounds.
i think this may be frank's best album, and for me it's one of the great live albums around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sinatra at his best 23 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Sinatra had two ways of singing. Studio and concert. His studio recordings are second to none, but to really hear him "swing" you need a concert performance. Out of all of the concerts I have heard, the Sands it Sinatra at his best, and with Count Basey behind him life just couldn't get better. The album kicks off with sinatra being called on stage, he performs hit after hit pausing only briefly for a comedy routine in the middle. If I had to throw away all of my Sinatra bar one, the Sands would be the album I kept.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to believe it's live 8 Jan 2001
Format:Audio CD
Several of the songs on this incredible live recording are so perfected that it's hard to believe they were recorded "live" rather than at a studio, but that is why Sinatra is as legendary an artist to America as Saphos was to the ancient world. The rendition of "Fly Me to the Moon" is utterly indestinguishable from a prerecording, so perfectly is it "nailed down" as are other hits such as "Come Fly with Me" and "Shadow of Your Smile". As far as I can tell, this CD has the finest rendition of "Luck Be A Lady" ever recorded and, for that matter, may ever be recorded.

Excellent disc of our favourite performer/singer accompanied by the equally excellent Count Basie Orchestra. The authentic performance did not spoil the general effect.
