Here Sinatra is accompanied by Neal Hefti and the orchestra. Most of the 12 tracks are up-tempo - the only real exception is `Serenade in blue'. And the Chairman of the Board is at his most extrovert and confident, as reflected in occasional diversions from the original lyrics. The tunes are all `standards' with three from Cole Porter, and Kern, Mercer and Gershwin all represented. This is noonday music: you wouldn't want to put this on as you're winding down to sleep! I've heard Sinatra in better voice on this same material elsewhere (with Billy May or Johnny Mandel or even Nelson Riddle who didn't go in for backings quite this brassy), but it's an OK swinging CD.

THIS EXCELLENT FRANK SINATRA ALBUM COMES FROM 1962 SESSIONS WITH NEAL HEFTI'S IMAGINATIVE AND PROPULSIVE ARRANGEMENTS, AND IS INTERESTING WHEN COMPARED WITH THE BILLY MAY ARRANGED CAPITOL OUTING FROM A SIMILAR PERIOD 'COME SWING WITH ME'. BOTH SHOWCASE A DOZEN FINE STANDARDS WITH MR. SINATRA IN TREMENDOUS FORM. WHERE THIS ALBUM WINS OUT IS IN THE MORE IMAGINATIVE JAZZY SETTINGS FROM HEFTI AS OPPOSED TO THE MORE CONVENTIONAL BILLY MAY BIG BAND SOUND. ALSO, MR SINATRA IS IN WONDERFUL VOICE AND GIVES EACH NUMBER HIS BEST SHOT. RIGHT FROM THE OPENING 'GOODY GOODY' YOU KNOW YOU'RE IN FOR A GOOD LISTEN WITH FINE VERSIONS OF 'I'M BEGINNING TO SEE THE LIGHT', 'DON'CHA GO 'WAY MAD', 'AIN'T SHE SWEET' ETC. THERE IS, AS SO OFTEN IN SINATRA SWING ALBUMS, A SUBTLE CHANGE OF PACE AND HERE IT APPEARS ON 'SERENADE IN BLUE' WHERE WE HEAR A VINTAGE SINATRA VOCAL SLOW-SWINGING THE HELL OUT OF THIS GREAT SONG.THE WHOLE PACKAGE SEES FRANK IN AUTHORITATIVE FORM, IN FACT IT'S A MASTER CLASS IN HOW TO SWING. one of my all time favourite albums this is the swingiest cd in my collection and boy does this swing.sinatra gives it everything and with great backing from neal hefti this is a real winner. a lot of well known songs but youve never heard them like this before..... superb.
