Biography

Only Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson can rival Frank Sinatra for biggest-selling solo artist of all time. His jazz-influenced singing remained internationally renowned whatever whims, fashions or innovations were introduced by new generations. In a solo career that included over 70 albums and hundreds of singles, from the late-30s until the mid-90s, Sinatra remained universally loved even as… Read more in Amazon's Frank Sinatra Store

Wonderful ! 2 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Sinatra 65 is a compilation of various singles and songs that were largely unreleased by sinatra on studio albums in the 60's. This has been a very rare album for some time but now you can enjoy some cracking Sinatra music for peanuts ! Between albums Sinatra would record the odd single, these were mainly done more commercially than his traditional music and were done to try and capture a more contemporary audience in the 60's,Some people don't like these songs but a lot of them were actually very good. "When somebody loves you" and "Somewhere in your heart" are very catchy and use more modern instruments such as guitar, bass and backing singers, although these songs won't trouble some of his best work they are still nice tracks and well worth having. Elsewhere "Luck be a lady" and "My kind of town" can be found on many a Sinatra compilation so although great tracks won't be a great deal of interest to dedicated Sinatra fans buying this. One of the main jewels in the crown here though is the classic van huesen/cahn penned "I like to lead when i dance " from the Robin and the 7 hoods movie, vintage Sinatra ! "Stay with me" from Sinatra's early 60's movie "The Cardinal" is also quite a rare song and very nice.

If you have most of Sinatra's albums this is well worth picking up to add to your collection due to the rarity of some of the tracks.

FRANK AIN'T DEAN 16 Aug 2010
By ROMAN
Format:Audio CD
Another in a series of re-releases from Reprise highlighting Mr Sinatra's rarer recordings, this album issued during the year of his 50th birthday was rather drowned out by masterpieces such as 'September of my Years'and 'A Man and His Music'. However any Sinatra release requires a good listen and this one is no exception. It consists of several single releases from 1964/65 featuring choirs and heavy backbeats ('Tell Her [You Love Her Each Day], 'Any Time At All', 'Somewhere in Your Heart'et al)in an attempt to emulate Dean Martin's huge commercial successes for Sinatra's Reprise label. These are not as good and you can sense Frank tossing them off with the minimum of fuss and effort. Ernie Freeman and Jimmy Bowen (Dean Martin regulars)do their best but these sing-a-longs,though entertaining, are not in all honesty prime Sinatra. However the remainder of the album is. Culled from various contemporaneous releases such as the wonderful Reprise Rep. Theatre and the 'Robin and the Seven Hoods' movie, Frank is back in his element with top swingers 'My Kind of Town', 'You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me' and the top class 'Luck Be a Lady'. There are also excellent versions of the ballads 'When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love' and 'I've Never Been in Love Before'. Finally, there is the rare item 'I Like to Lead When I Dance' from the 'Robin...' movie which gets a great performance. A mixed bag then, but at this price well worth owning.

A rare treat 13 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
This gets a four star rating because of the diversity of material here. It hardly qualifies as a concept album like those that have a unifying theme to them, but its potpourri of different orchestra sounds and songs gives it the edge. I think the most interesting aspect of it are the Jimmy Bowen produced tracks that were made as potential hit singles guaranteed to appear in Billboards weekly top 100 . It so happens most of them did. Tell her you love her, Anytime at all, When somebody loves you and Somewhere in your heart all made it though still far away from the all important top 20, but they are little gems and a full album of them I would have also been happy with. Not long before this Sinatra had also done well with Softly As I Leave you, the album which I see is set to be reissued and also contains, Available (a good pun!) from the same stable of recordings produced by Bowen. The other songs on "65 are made up from the musical rep series and Robin & the 7 Hoods, but also a rare gem here is the main title music from The Cardinal "Stay with me" set to lyrics, a beautiful theme in its own right and given further expression by Sinatra's excellent dramatic interpretation of it. Most unusual. Enjoy! (PS. A previous reviewer mentions the Cardinal as having been a Sinatra film, which isn't the case at all and the theme was set to lyrics after the films release).
