Lude but true 23 Oct 2000
Format:Paperback
With a fascination with the past and a lust for the orient, Sin City quenched my thirst. Ralph Shaw captures the halcyon days of empire and exploitation. Post World War 1 Shanghai developed into a city like no other on Earth. The main social forces drove for materialistic profit and debaucherous consumption. Shaws main revelations are from the world of sexual-exploitation but this is not the only social-political coverage he makes. Shaw comments on the myopic belief that ' The good times will always roll,' and exposes the seeds of discord that will eventually reduce this ' pleasure land ' to rapid and violent change.

Carry on Shanghai 1 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is a real gem. Incredibly funny, daringly sexual and disarmingly charming, the author was a soldier and later a journalist in Shanghai in the 1930s and suffered internment under Japanese rule in the 1940s. I live in Shanghai today, and much of what he describes remains, the places, the attitudes and of course the outrageous nightlife. One of the best reads I've had in a long time.
