This has one exceptional track that makes it a worthwhile album. "I don't wanna go to Vietnam", Mr Hooker's heart felt protest meditation at conscription. With piano and harmonica counterpoint it is a reflective and considered piece of music. It is suprising it has not appeared on compilations and it is possible the man distanced himself from what is a raw political song of those times. But for me it still (in 2013) has resonance of a song about being forced into a fight for an unjust cause. The other tracks are more reflective of John Lee Hooker's blues approach at this time, quality and as always, well constructed.

HOOKED ON HOOKER!!!!! 22 May 2010
By Lonnie - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
According to the editorial review this is "not one of his most ineresting albums"!!! Well, I ordered it anyway...I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!!! This cd COOKS!!! Wally Richardson(guitar), Ernie Hayes(piano & organ), William Folwell(fender bass), Hele Rosenthal(harmonica) and "Pretty" Purdie(drums). These guys can put it down! Hayes' organ is awesome and this guy Rosenthal, who I'd never heard of, can play a mean harp! The only downside to this excellent set is it's TOO DAMN SHORT at just under 40 minutes!!! So, you've basically got 5 simmering blues numbers and 3 great up-tempo cuts. (Probably the reason I'd never heard of this guy Rosenthal on harp is because, according to the liner notes, he'd NEVER BEEN IN A RECORDING STUDIO BEFORE!!! WHAT A SHAME!!!) Anyways, do yourself a favor: PICK UP THIS CD!!! Procuced by Bob Thiele, liner notes by John F. Szwed(contributing editor to JAZZ AND POP). 'Nuf said!
