4.0 out of 5 stars Actually, not bad stuff! 30 Sep 2007

Have to disagree with the other reviewer, as this isn't actually that bad. There's 4 CDs of Salsa/Cuban/Latin music of slightly differing moods (Latin Cool, Late night Latin, Latin for Lovers and Salsa Dance Classics) and although it sounds a bit cheesy and some of the tracks are by the same artist (presumably as a commercial cover band) which does make you tend to avoid these CDs, actually they are quite good and each of the CDs are great to put on. Admittedly this wouldn't be a CD you'd recommend as your only entree into the world of Salsa and it's not going to cut the mustard in a London club, but it's great to stick on for an evening or Sunday afternoon just to put a bit of latin background to your house - and for that it does the job well. I've danced, taught and DJed Salsa for 12 years now and also travelled extensively around South America and Cuba and I still think it's okay - especially for the price!

I bought this box set a few months ago. When I eventually read the reviews on Amazon, I was astounded that one (any) listener could award only one star for this compilation. Why? There are at least three reasons. One, the sound quality and the performances are all to a high standard - there's no filler here. Two, there's a good range of latin music and many great performers, past and present, big band and soloist. Admittedly, a group called Ritmo Alegria (perhaps, a London-based salsa band contracted to Union Square?) perform on 14 of the 52 tracks, and even though their sound is more reverential than incendiary, they are eminently listenable! Lastly, like all decent compilations this one provides a few stand-out tracks that will direct the listener to work by these performers in the future. A singer I will definitely be looking for again is the 'firebreathing' Lola Flores.

1.0 out of 5 stars don't buy this 13 July 2007

Bad production - bad salsa - just a collection of tinny sounding stuff.

I love salsa but this set of CDs has been filed in the blue bin.
