Product Description

Now with an interactive Table of Contents and dozens of pictures.

Simply Sailing is the story of a young couple who sold their house, cars, and everything that wouldn't fit on a 34-foot sailboat, resigned from their jobs, and with three young sons, set off on a life of adventure. What they discovered will delight, entertain, and inspire readers to chase their own dreams, to find a solution to the problems that are holding them back, and to finally live.

Simply Sailing shows by example how easily one can eliminate stress, become more independent, spend more time with your children, and avoid the traps of commercialism. By simplifying their lives and taking an eco-friendly approach, they wander and explore for longer, rather than rushing to stop at the places on the list before the money runs out. Cruisers will learn how to change a trip into a lifestyle, raise their children in a safer environment, and instill values not based on the mighty dollar, while seeing parts of the world most middle Americans will never experience.

Simply Sailing offers lighthearted tales of the adventures and woes experienced by a sailing family. It includes tips for avoiding common pitfalls, simplifying your boat and life, and making a small boat a comfortable home. The stories and advice inspire would-be sailors to leave sooner, travel farther, and enjoy life more fully.

2.0 out of 5 stars So-so 30 Jan. 2011
By A Customer
Format:Kindle Edition
Too light on adventure and inspiration for me. Much of the book focuses the author's opinion of good housekeeping on a small boat. There's also an element of contempt for people who make choices different to her own. When she describes one of their favorite pass times as laughing at people struggling to use their [stupid] inflatable dingies with their [stupid] outboard motors it makes me wonder wether she is getting any real joy from living on a boat - or is she just hiding from the rest of the world?

2.0 out of 5 stars Simply sailing? 3 April 2011
By Ally-cat - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read many technical sailing books, cruising stories, single-handed sailors books and many others.
I did not enjoy this book and found the author's condescending tone quite annoying. As a fellow 'sailor' since also selling my home to live full-time on a yacht, I understand the challenges and sacrifices one makes as they transition from 'landlubbers' to live-aboard sailors.

My main beef with this book was the inference that other cruisers do not live simply enough and the best way is described in this book. Getting rid of the head because you don't know how or don't want to fix it? I would not like to empty a bucket at 2am with 4 metre seas and 35 knot winds!

I've managed to acquire many tricks and tips to make the cruising life (ie: your new home) more comfortable through reading many books, researching and experiencing first-hand. I would recommend anyone considering a fulltime cruising life consider hours of research reading blogs, many other books and technical manuals. If they choose to read this book, they may be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Armchair Sailor, Daysailor, Cruiser, or Adventurer, READ THIS BOOK 25 Feb. 2011
By Captain Doug - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I almost gave this Kindle book four stars. Some of the descriptions of enhancements and repairs got rather tedious for me despite the authors obvious strength as a wordsmith.

Pictures would have been nice, there is a website though. What caused me to give this book five stars was the "Cut through the male bovine feces" approach for those who are "thinking" about a cruising lifestyle and bringing it.

Connie is a masterful writer, and obviously too much woman for Dave - whom I now hate. (Joke, don't shoot a flare at my boat Dave! :) ) Seriously, Dave is a Man's man and good on him for his choice of boat, mate, and lifestyle. The entire family is an inspiration to all who think about cruising, do cruise, or just want to know more.

Even landlocked individuals and families will find much to learn here. Life lessons about conquering materialism without a becoming a miser or monk. No matter what your dream is, this book is an illustration of concentrated intent and action for success.

The writer puts you where you are wondering where you can go, or if you have been and gone lends a different perspective to bring the cruising life to the less than wealthy.

If you enjoy reading an author who knows their territory and can take you along for the ride, this is your book.

Practical advice on all aspects of cruising are here. This book is even of great value for those of means who motor-sail in comfort with all the latest conveniences. Having the knowledge from seasoned live aboard adventurers who "use it up, wear it out, fix it up, make do" will belay panic and anxiety when, not if, that latest amazeOmatic 9000 fails crossing the Gulf Stream. When no UPS truck can have a replacement there with next day delivery the knowledge in this book will stand the seafarer in good stead.

If you are contemplating living aboard a moving home as simply and stress free as possible the book is even more valuable.

My own cruising dream is different than most. I have ridden across the Atlantic and the Med, courtesy of the U.S.S. Nimitz, also seen the Caribbean. My dream is coastal cruising the USA.

In this book I found the means to make my own blueprint. Important as the practical knowledge found, perhaps more so, is the realization of how much I have to learn yet.

Connie doesn't baby you by breaking every single thing down. Anything that a skipper and crew should know in nautical parlance is thrown at you. If like this reader you don't immediately understand all of the terminology, better ask somebody.

Realizing what you don't know is a very valuable thing. So is the list of books kept on board the floating home of the Mcbrides'.

Words fail me in an attempt to describe how happy I am that I downloaded this book, so I'll stop trying and leave anyone reading this review with my heartiest endorsement that they also get "Simply Sailing".

5.0 out of 5 stars More Please 22 Feb. 2011
By Mystic - Published on Amazon.com

Simply Sailing taught me things about living on a sailboat that are not only helpful to me but the planet as well. Being a "liveaboard" can be difficult at times, this book takes some of that away. A great read for anyone interested in living on a boat. For anyone considering changing their lifestyle and moving aboard a boat it shows that it can be done without all the "stuff" so many magazines and books say are necessary. Looking forward for more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully written, first hand glimpse at simple adventure 28 Nov. 2011
By Gentlemandan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Let me start off by saying I LOVED this read. Although I doubt it was intended, this work and associated web site vets the true minimalists from those simply going through the throws of escape fantasies. For those of us who can't afford the price of admission to this lifestyle (divorce), Mrs. McBride offers an opportunity to live vicariously though her first hand narratives. If your choice includes living life at a basic level aboard, it' will fuel thoughtful reflection. For me, it was a great adventure from the safety of my own bed. Her site is now a regular weekly read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this! 6 April 2012
By K. OMalley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not a sailing type of person, but I loved going on Connie's journey with her, so to speak, as I read along from the safety of my home. It was easy to imagine myself with her family because her writing really draws you into the adventures. The tips here and there of their frugal (simple) living makes one think about how wasteful we can be, but don't need to be! Thank you for letting us into your lives! Great read!!!
