Product Description

Product Description

Designed as an introduction to PROLOG programming for artificial intelligence, this text discusses both basic and advanced AI techniques, as implemented in PROLOG. Writing for the undergraduate, the author simplifies the basic concepts of logic programming, seen as a useful framework for explaining AI techniques. Exercises are integrated with explanatory text and difficult concepts are made clear by the use of simple, real-world examples. As a further teaching aid, each technique discussed is accompanied by a program implementing it, and the importance of learning the skill of program development is emphasized. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format:Paperback
This text is unique becuase it takes a very practical approach to introducing AI, logic programming (which can be a shock to those used to the much more common imperative programming), and inductive logic. Particularly with such a potentially theoretical topic, this text emphasises that the reader *does* the activities ... and this approach helps the reader grasp a topic which is often considered too difficult.

The text can also be considered a brief introduction to Prolog and again its unique approach is to emphasise how the prolog runtime does its evaluation ... essential to make the most of prolog.

The later advanced topics seem a little rushed and don't get the step by step treatment that most of the topics benefit from. Perhaps a new edition would correct this?

This book is an excellent introduction for the newcomer to the field of Artificial Intelligence. The many examples make clear the purpose and use of Prolog, and explain basic AI techniques. Futhermore, the text has excellent theoretical sections, ensuring that the reader gains a full understanding of deductive logic, and its implementation in Prolog. The concluding advanced chapters also have interesting discussions of inductive logic, abductive logic and default reasoning. Overall a very readable and informative book.

a gem! 19 Jun 2010
By King Yin Yan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The author Peter Flach has contributed a lot to the logic-based AI literature, in particular in abduction and induction.

As expected, this book devoted some sections to abduction and inductive learning, illustrated by Prolog code. I find the inductive reasoning chapter particularly helpful.

If you find the book hard to understand -- I skipped the introductory chapters so I don't know -- you may try Ivan Bratko's Prolog textbook.

Simply Incomprehensible! 18 July 2002
By "bob_jones001" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The author of this book may be a great logician, but he compunicates his ideas extremely badly, making this book agonisingly difficult to read.

The author is clearly not a native English speaker, and avoids explaining any concepts in depth, instead using page after page of Prolog code to demonstrate principles.

This tiny book really isn't worth the paper its printed on.
