Product Description

Review

'This book will prove highly valuable for those training in CBT and those practicing it. It is timely given the growing interest in developing CBT to better meet the needs of the huge number of people who could benefit from it. Dr Scott's particular skill is in demystifying the process of CBT and making it relevant to those people we meet in routine clinical situations. This is a book written by a highly experienced clinician and researcher clearly at the top of his game' - Dr Jim White, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board.

'Mike Scott brings the therapeutic arena alive using clinical examples, therapeutic transcripts and some of his own words of wisdom. A lively and accessible text, designed for CBT therapists, supervisors and trainers.' - Dr Vivien Twaddle, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Newcastle Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies Centre.

'This book manages to balance and structure theory, research and practical detail in a guide which helps the reader to understand how to conduct cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). Not only does it provide a clear clinical guide to treatment, but it also helps the reader to identify further resources and tools which will allow the clinician to extend the scope of their work without losing the essential empirical grounding which underpins CBT'. - Paul Salkovskis, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Clinical Director of the Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma, Maudsley Hospital.

'...clear, concise and easy to use. It will help you work in a systematic way...' Clinical Psychology Forum.

Product Description

Research shows that cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for common mental health disorders of mild to moderate severity. Simply Effective Cognitive Behaviour Therapy guides the therapist in treating clients effectively in a simple, structured, time-limited way, as well as indicating where additional treatment or referral is required, thus widening access to CBT.

In this book, Michael J. Scott provides a practical and concise guide for therapists using CBT with a range of disorders including:

  • depression
  • panic disorder and agoraphobia
  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • generalised anxiety disorder
  • obsessive compulsive disorder
  • social phobia.

Simply Effective CBT is illustrated throughout with transcripts of sessions which serve as models for putting theory into practice. It provides the therapist with sufficient understanding of the cognitive theory of a disorder, enabling them to tailor the protocols provided to the needs of the individual. The appendices include a CBT Pocketbook - to guide treatment and assessment for each disorder - making it essential reading for all professionals using CBT.

Simply Effective CBT 11 Aug 2009
By Joan
Format:Paperback
Dr Scott's book provides an excellent, straightforward guide to those developing their skills as CBT practitioners. It would also be of interest to those who would like to know more about CBT and the different models, theory, rationale and procedures of CBT used for each disorder. These models are clearly explained citing many appropriate and easy to access references for further in-depth reading, assessment and study. The reader is provided with a clear focus and structure to work with, ensuring that important aspects of the client's care are not overlooked. The prompts and hints that Dr Scott provides specific for each disorder can be used easily as a reference guide during client sessions. This is really helpful when things get stuck or wander off course and can be especially helpful for the trainee. This has helped me to improve my competence in managing the therapy process and ensuring time with clients is used wisely. Readers will benefit greatly from Dr Scott's many practical examples from his own practice, along with his many hints and tips which he shares throughout the book.
Dr Scott highlights the need for a clear diagnosis. He includes in the book the 7 Minute Mental Health Screen/Audit which can be used as a simple, wide-ranging initial screen. He also provides sound advice regarding the helpfulness of using structured clinical interviews to establish which disorder(s) are present and to ensure that common-place co-existing disorders are not missed and thus left untreated. The suggested psychometrics for each disorder are well chosen and referenced, along with their strengths and pitfalls. He presents evidence where it exists and clearly shares with the reader where there are gaps. Importantly, Dr Scott is clear where CBT is not helpful and provides guidance for alternatives and referral. The importance of assessing suicide risk is covered comprehensively.
Dr Scott takes great care to share with the reader many common difficulties from the client's perspective and how to resolve them with empathy and understanding. Dr Scott does a great job keeping the process straight-forward, focused and workable.

This book gives a good summary of the basics of CBT and disorder specific models. It does use some strange examples which I doubt you could use in real practice but all in all it provides a good overview of the basics which you can build on with further reading.
