In some ways the title of this book is a bit misleading. It is a detailed guide to making your own clothes, not really sewing in general. It does have information on the operating of sewing machines, including ample information specifically on sergers.
This is a very colourful book with many illustrations. However, I found it a bit awkward to use, it has a spiral notebook binding, but the cover wobbles so much, that if you hold it, the pages sag below the edge of the cover and seem very loose and unstable. I really cannot imagine this binding connection standing the test of time or much use. I thought it might be made in this wobbly manner so that you could turn the front cover to the back and save space, but this doesn't work.
There are tabs dividing the sections, which cover: reasons to sew, finding what flatters, understanding patterns, fabrics, notions, sewing machines, measuring your body and basics such as pattern cutting, machine sewing, using scissors, iron and hand sewing. Sewing techniques such as darts, making collars, pockets, waistlines, trims and decorations and sewing on special fabrics are included. There is a glossary and an index.
If what you are looking for is a very specific help to make clothes from patterns, this would be perfect, but as a general guide to sewing other items or mending and repairs or even sewing something besides clothes, it does not really encompass all that a beginner should know.
