5.0 out of 5 stars Like Having Your Own Personal Sewing Tutor 27 Mar 2010
What a brilliantly practical and well presented book. Perfect for the complete beginner as it guides you through the basic knowledge and techniques like your own personal tutor. The text is clearly written and the accompanying illustrations are very easy to understand. It is part mechanical manual and part technique book.

We are introduced to the different types of machine including uploaders (sergers), and buying the right one for your needs. We are then guided through the mechanics of the machine and how each part works - which is a great help when it comes to troubleshooting. It even tells you how to thread your machine and change needles etc. The different types of fabric and stitches are also explored before moving onto the techniques of sewing.

In this second section we are guided through seams, darts, hems, zips, buttonholes, gathers, tucks, pleats, binding and trimming before finishing off with a look at decorative techniques such as embroidery, applique, patchwork and quilting. The book is aimed at all sewers whether you make garments or sew homestyle projects.
The glossary at the end sums up everything covered in the book for quick reference.

This is a book you can either read cover to cover or dip into when you wish to receive instruction on a particular technique or require a troubleshooting solution. Either way it's a book to treasure.
I can't imagine a more informative, and clearly written book to go with a novice's first sewing machine.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to make best use of a sewing machine 8 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a frequent "home drsssmaker" I found this book very worthwhile because it is so easy to "forget" many of the assets of a modern sewing machine. It is easy to fall into your own routines and ways of getting the job done. A good tool to refer to from time to time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really really useful book 13 Jun 2011
I got this book as I had an old sewing machine that I was trying to get working and so was particularly interested in the setting up and trouble shooting elements of the book.

However it would be equally useful to anyone who just wants to know the skills and techniques required in order to sew seams, hems, pleats, zips and buttonholes.

While this isn't a project book it does also include a section on decorative techniques including applique and quilting which looks very informative though I haven't been that adventurous with my machine yet.

As the book includes various different types of machine not all the sections will be applicable to the average reader however at the price it is still very good value for money.

A great product that puts a year long course in sewing into one book. Easy to understand and many different things to learn. Also the buyer was fast and their description accurate. Not in any way a hassle to use and will definetly be buying from them again.

Just come back to sewing after many years -- and how things have changed -- found this book provides a good overview of the 'sewing machine' -- currently available -- overlockers, sewing machines, embroidery machines and sewing feet -- with basic uses of the sewing feet in seams etc
