What a brilliantly practical and well presented book. Perfect for the complete beginner as it guides you through the basic knowledge and techniques like your own personal tutor. The text is clearly written and the accompanying illustrations are very easy to understand. It is part mechanical manual and part technique book.
We are introduced to the different types of machine including uploaders (sergers), and buying the right one for your needs. We are then guided through the mechanics of the machine and how each part works - which is a great help when it comes to troubleshooting. It even tells you how to thread your machine and change needles etc. The different types of fabric and stitches are also explored before moving onto the techniques of sewing.
In this second section we are guided through seams, darts, hems, zips, buttonholes, gathers, tucks, pleats, binding and trimming before finishing off with a look at decorative techniques such as embroidery, applique, patchwork and quilting. The book is aimed at all sewers whether you make garments or sew homestyle projects.
The glossary at the end sums up everything covered in the book for quick reference.
This is a book you can either read cover to cover or dip into when you wish to receive instruction on a particular technique or require a troubleshooting solution. Either way it's a book to treasure.
I can't imagine a more informative, and clearly written book to go with a novice's first sewing machine.
