Product Description

Product Description

With their 2001 release, Speaking In Tongues, The Holmes Brothers took a huge step up in press coverage, radio airplay and, most importantly, sales. Simple Truths is their new studio release produced by Grammy Award-winner Craig Street (Norah Jones, Chris Whitley, Kd Lang). The album is an adventurous, soulful journey through American roots music - blues, R&B and country. From raucous roadhouse rockers to heartbreaking ballads, the tracks include four great new Holmes Brothers compositions as well as stirring, entirely original interpretations of songs associated with Jimmy Reed, Jim Reeves, Collective Soul, Gillian Welch, Hank Williams, Bruce Channel, Townes Van Zandt, Willie Nelson and Bob Marley. Despite the wide stylistic range of the material the release has an intimate, true-to-life sound thanks to producer Street and engineer (and fellow Grammy Award-winner) S. Husky Hoskulds (Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits, Solomon Burke).

Product Description

Äußerst empfehlenswert / An incredible mix of tunes from extremely diverse sources: country, reggae, pop, and blues. I can't imagine anybody else but the Holmes Brothers to make these tunes sound like their own ones. Unique. I like the rather simple, very 'real' and direct sounding production. One of their best albums, and one of the finest releases in recent times. Highly recommended. WENDELL HOLMES - voc/gtr, SHERMAN HOLMES - bass/voc, POPSY DIXON - drums/voc.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the real deal 26 Feb 2004

If you want something that's straight from the heart and pure to the artform then you'll love this latest work from the Holmes Bros.
It's somewhat eclectic, giving you blues, old school R&B and a bit of gospel, they even cover two Hank Williams tunes doing a great job on " So lonesome I could cry "
The music is uncluttered and straight foward supporting the soulful vocals perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavenly Singin 16 Sep 2004
By John Carroll - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Simple Truths is a stripped down record rooted in Harlem blues with touches of gospel, country and folk music scattered throughout. Great harmonies punctuate these songs especially on the touching We Meet, We Part, We Remember. They turn If i Needed You into a spiritual experience, the kind where you kick back, close your eyes, and drink a budweiser to. Bob Marley's surely nodding his head in approval in heaven when he listens to their soulful version of Concrete Jungle. Popsy Dixon's singin on Gillian Welch's Everything is Free is sublime. Good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth getting 15 Mar 2004

I had one other Holmes Bros album which was slick & produced to death & had given up on them in spite of hearing that they are amazing live... I picked this one up & it's different! Raw, engaging & full of inspired covers. Some nice guitar, unique singing & harmonizing... highly recommended. Pick it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'nuff sed 1 Jun 2004

Saw them at the Strawberry Music Festival and...WOW! Their live performance was excellent, the next morning's gospel "workshop" sublime! The album, while testimony in itself to the quality of this band, only begins to showcase the harmonies, the musicianship, the soul of this trio. Not a skippable song among them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Next best thing to live... 8 April 2004

You can get this cd if the HBs aren't coming to your town, or to remember how great there were when they DID come, but don't miss them live if you can make it: More great sound comes out of this trio than you could ever believe,(if your eyes were closed).
