Book Description

Stress is a condition or state when an individual is overwhelmed by any kind of emotional or mental pressure. Minimal levels of stress can be quite energizing or motivating boosting the mind and sensory system but when it is at high levels, it can affect one both emotionally and physically. Stress is handled differently by different people. For instance, a situation that might be stressing to a person might actually be of great essence to another. Stress can affect an individual in several ways; it can affect how they work, think, feel, behave, how they react and handle the stressing situation and even how their bodies function. When an individual is stressed, the brain’s hypothalamus triggers the production of stress hormones known as cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones increase the person’s breathing and heart rates to energize the body so that they can respond to the stressing situation accordingly. The manner in which the body reacts to stress is commonly referred to as the ‘fight-flight’ response. The moment the stressing situation comes to an end, the production of these hormones should reduce and go back to normal levels. When this does not happen, the individual is stressed for prolonged periods which is not good for their health. There are several causes of stress such as failed relationships, work, natural disasters, financial problems, difficult decisions, trauma or even loss of a loved one among others.

There are various effects of stress that can be psychological or mental, behavioral, emotional and physical in nature. These eventually affect one’s health. Therefore, it is important to know the signs of stress so that one can determine whether they are stressed or not. And, if they are stressed indeed, they can put in place measures to help cope with the situation before it a=takes toll of them. Some common signs to look out for are sleep problems, lack of concentration, low self esteem, an upset stomach, loss of appetite, persistent headaches, too much worry, anxiety, frequent loss of temper, irritability, sweating, pain or tension in the body muscles, behaving unusually, excessive drinking, loss of memory, overeating, depression and feeling dizzy among others. Although there is no way that one can avoid getting stressed up, detecting stress early and managing it can help prevent worse health complications such as high blood pressure, depression, obesity, diseases of the heart, cancer, diseases of the lungs as well as liver cirrhosis. Stress management can also help prevent suicides and accidents. Although being stressed isn’t an illness, it can lead to serious health conditions named above hence the essence of detecting it early so that one can adopt techniques that will help them cope without developing these health complications.

Due to the fact that stress cannot be prevented from taking place, stress management tactics and techniques come in handy. These techniques can help one cope with stress and manage it effectively. While some coping techniques are positive, there are those that are negative which should be avoided as they can affect one’s health apart from providing short term solutions and they include smoking, drinking and even overeating. Positive techniques of coping with stress are long-term and improves one’s resilience to this emotional situation and includes exercises and taking deep breathes among others. Therefore, with the right techniques and therapies, one can easily manage stress and live a healthy life. This book looks into twenty relaxation exercises and therapy techniques to reduce stress on-the-spot. These techniques are discussed in detail and the book is a must-read for effective management of stress which in most cases is inevitable!

Don't just read these techniques, but try and actually apply them. We are deluged by books of these types at the moment but most make promises they can't keep - this book comes through with the goods, and who knows, it could even save your life.

2.0 out of 5 stars I was not impressed 19 May 2014

I was not impressed. You won't learn anything from this book if you're already familiar with basic stress relieving techniques. If you are not familiar maybe this book might help. I also felt the writing itself was lacking. I received this book when there was a freebie offer. I would've been upset if I had paid any money for this book.
