5.0 out of 5 stars An Ideal Tool 24 July 2010
HP Simple Save Portable HD/320gb 2.5 Inch USB2

I have now owned one of these for 6 months and cannot fault it. I use it to back up three desk tops and two laptops. Two of the desk tops are five years old (a Dell and a Packard Bell both running XP) and have had no problems what so ever. I was really pleased, when shortly after buying it an ageing Acer laptop (also running XP) decided to turn up its toes and because we had everything backed up on the Simple Save we had an easy task transfering all the data etc to another machine (the aged Packard) without any apparent loss.

It can take a while to do the initial backup for each machine (it creates individual backups for each machine so it's an absolute dodle to retrieve anything) after that it just adds anything new that you have saved on the computer, which if you backup once a week will take a couple of minutes. During the process it shows you the type, number and size of file that it is saving fr you. I have encountered no issues using the Simple Save with Windows XP, Vista and 7 (we have a laptop running Vista and a desltop running 7). Its instalation and operation are as it says in the name, simple. it is light weight, portable and is a smart looking unit.

I like it so much that I have just ordered a second one to be exclusively used for my work laptop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good... 15 Feb 2011

I recently purchased this external hard drive, I am extremely happy with this and am thinking of maybe getting a second. Easy to use, just plug in and and set up is straight forward. Useful to have as a backup for files; work, pictures, music etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just read my comments and decide.... 4 Dec 2009
This HPSS (HP Simplesave) did not work well on my PC - i have a 5 year old pc with windows XP and lots of applications on it. And yet this device seemed to be ok on the Tesco computers in their store with Windows 7 so i'm not going to condemn this gadget completely and it does look and feel great but it wasn't for me or my poor PC!

What happened: HPSS started off ok, launched itself and did big back up and then went downhill after that. My 'P' drive list of back-up documents never got updated giving me no confidence in what it was doing, it was meant to back up when the pc was in idle mode - i was never convinced that such back-ups occured and the HP icon on bottom of screen came and went many times then disappeared, leaving me with no access or control to what it was doing. Having called numerous helplines no one could fathom out the problem and so I returned it to Tesco and got a new replacement, this time it didn't even launch. So called another PC Helpline and finally concluded it wasn't going to work, so returned it again and for good and got a refund! having wasted so much time on it and feeling rather exhausted and suffering from a 'Techno stress trauma disorder'! Especially trying to contact the HP helpline i have never known such a shambles of a customer care service - spent 80 minutes going from dept to dept and then was told a load of 'cack' by the tech person i finally spoke to! I was mentally scarred by this experience! I wish there were awards for good and bad customer service - this one deserves the biggest non-award and a big fat raspberry!

I then went to PC world & explained the problem to them and ended up buying a 'Clickfree Portable hard drive 320GB' for £109 - yep twice as expensive as the Simplesave but my god its brilliant and worth every penny (both in me feeling secure with having my data reliably updated and in terms of getting my life back from trying to problem solve the HPSS device for which i spent hours trying out different ideas and calling various PC helplines). 'Clickfree' does an initial big backup and then backups every day if you want it to (you can see exactly what it backs up and can control it e.g. how often it back-up and what it does in so many ways). I love it so much! Such a relief to find a gadget that really fully satisfies and does what it says on the label (only thing it doesn't do is delete anything you delete on you main drives (so if you were to need to do a restore at any time it would bring up everything that its backed up - but when it backs up it will add any new documents to the backup including edited copies of documents.

So if your HPSS is messing you around get a refund and get a Clickfree portable external hard drive!

Cheers
Reiki Sue x
