Kenna White calls Joplin, Missouri her hometown. She interviewed the residents after the disasterous EF-5 tornado flattened their town. She uses thier thoughts, feelings, and memories to make Simple Pleasures, a book which starts with the tornado, vividly real and believeable. For Dale Kinsel, the protagonist in this story, hiding in the bath tub, with a towel over her, was her best protection as the storm built and the tornado formed. Once the tornado has passed over, Dale's home is gone, as is most of her neighborhood. Happily, Home Depot, where she works, sets up a temporary tent store to help the residents, and she at least has a job to go to. She also has Taren, the sister of Sydney, the partner she lost to cancer. Taren, who ran into Dale at a softball game, is concerned about her, post tornado.
What follows is the story of a growing friendship/relationship, the rebuilding of a life, and the remarkable courage of someone who is a three year sober graduate of AA. Veteran author, Kenna White, has given readers a strong, resilient character in Dale Kinsel. She also given readers an idea of the strength and fortitude of those who live in the path of tornados. Here, readers have an idea of what they go through, and what they turn around and face once again. This is a great read, with good characters, humor, and strength.
