A mile wide and with winds rising from 110 miles per hour to over 200, the tornado that laid waste to Joplin, Missouri, took everything from Dale Kinsel. The last thing she needs is the arrival of Sydney s sister Taren, the nemesis of Dale s past. There is nothing but bad blood between them and Taren s help doesn t change that. Surrounded by a broken landscape, Dale has little hope of reclaiming even the simple pleasures. But life and love have a way of starting over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Struggle and growth after the EF-5 Tornado 28 Oct 2013
By RLynne - Published on
Kenna White calls Joplin, Missouri her hometown. She interviewed the residents after the disasterous EF-5 tornado flattened their town. She uses thier thoughts, feelings, and memories to make Simple Pleasures, a book which starts with the tornado, vividly real and believeable. For Dale Kinsel, the protagonist in this story, hiding in the bath tub, with a towel over her, was her best protection as the storm built and the tornado formed. Once the tornado has passed over, Dale's home is gone, as is most of her neighborhood. Happily, Home Depot, where she works, sets up a temporary tent store to help the residents, and she at least has a job to go to. She also has Taren, the sister of Sydney, the partner she lost to cancer. Taren, who ran into Dale at a softball game, is concerned about her, post tornado.
What follows is the story of a growing friendship/relationship, the rebuilding of a life, and the remarkable courage of someone who is a three year sober graduate of AA. Veteran author, Kenna White, has given readers a strong, resilient character in Dale Kinsel. She also given readers an idea of the strength and fortitude of those who live in the path of tornados. Here, readers have an idea of what they go through, and what they turn around and face once again. This is a great read, with good characters, humor, and strength.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice 16 Nov 2013
By Jen - Published on
This was a nice quick easy read that had one of my favorite plot devices to start the novel off with. We are immediately introduced to Dale and Taren who are playing on opposite teams in a charity softball game. Sparks fly because these two women cannot stand each other. Dale's deceased partner was Taren's sister and all we know initially is that these two do not get along. I really enjoy these love/hate relationships because there is so much potential for delicious tension, angst and passion.

Slowly throughout the novel the reasons for the anger between these two are revealed and I really liked how that played out. Its not stupid stuff either. Kenna White did a really excellent job of creating a few characters who have real shortcomings and yet are still very good people.

The entire story though centers around the incredibly destructive EF-5 Tornado that laid waste to a large part of Joplin, Missouri in 2011. I remember seeing the news reports about this horrible event, but honestly I think I felt more connected to what happened after reading this novel. We get to live through this event and its aftermath by seeing the whole thing through Dale's eyes. There are a few moments that really are very sad.

Life goes on though and this is when we really get to know several of the excellent secondary characters while Dale rebuilds her life. This book is a solid 4/5 and was really enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Author of the 2012 Winner Lambda Literary Award for Romance 12 Mar 2014
By E. B. MULLIGAN - Published on
Dale Kinsel, is a 46 year old salt of the earth woman, widower and once avid softball player participating in a charity game to fight cancer. She's been a department head at Home Depot for nearly five years. She also bitterly hated Taren Doesey.

Taren Dorsey, is on the other team and wouldn't know a softball from a baseball. After an altercation years ago (unknown to the reader), Dale avoids her at all times. We find out that Dale's partner, Sydney, was killed by cancer 3 years ago, Sydney was Taren's sister. Game over, everyone heads home to Joplin Missouri and the deadly and huge tornado that hit in 2010 leveling parts of the town. The author does a terrific effort of putting the reader right in the storm and and terror of the residents along with PTSD of the survivors. Dale's home is destroyed and neighborhood flattened. Dale chooses to protect her property from looters rather than move in with her sister in her small apartment. Dale asks Taren if she can buy back the camping trailer that she & Sidney gave Taren when they stopped using it. Of course Taren says yes take it, and then proceeds to happen to stop by regularly with offers of help. Just the opposite of Dale's vapid new g/f Janice. Good story, good emotions, the happily ever after with your sister in law plot-line has never grabbed me but the whole recovering from a disaster was terrific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joplin and the Tornado 9 Nov 2013
By Avid Reader - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Personally knowing someone who lived in Joplin when the big tornado hit, I was aware that there was devastation in some areas (not my friend's). This book takes you into the storm itself and then through the aftermath. Little details about personal losses make the devastation perfectly clear. The story is full of people the reader is sure to like, and the love story is solidly set forth. Kenna White is a very good writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Realistic natural disaster story 22 Feb 2014

This story is a vivid retell of life after the loss of home, loved ones and a way of life all taken by a tornado. Vividly descriptive, wonderful character development, and renewing and changing bonds with those from your past all play a role in the ongoing life after suffering tragedy. Of course, a romance is a part :)
