1.0 out of 5 stars uninspiring at best, 23 Feb 2009
I bought this on the strength of the previous review and while I agree about the benefits of a slow cooker I found the recipes in this particular book uninspiring at best - at worst 'canned mandarin oranges and tofu'. I also disliked the number of fake 'chicken' recipes and the reference to 'beef style seitan': there is superb and innovative vegan food out there (see The Millenium Cookbook if you're a foodie). Why ape meat cookery without the meat?

As for it's claims to international cuisine: no risotto (p34 being the nearest equivalent as it uses arborio but the rice is cooked separately which defeats the whole object), no kitcheree or dahl, no moussaka or ratatouille - authentic regional recipes that it actually makes sense to cook in a crock pot.

Finally there are far too many recipes that involve canned and frozen produce not to mention cooking outside the slow cooker altogether e.g boiling pasta + rice, frying 'egg(?) rolls' and a number of recipes that don't require a slow cooker at all...

One star for the advice on cooking beans

1.0 out of 5 stars Mac D's cookbook, 24 Feb 2009
By jp (uk) - See all my reviews
This has to be the worst cookbook I've ever had the misfortune to buy.
No thanks to one review on here.

It is written entirely for an American market and frankly should have stayed there. Lazy sloppy cooking, barely anything is fresh, it's all tinned or frozen,or worse still pseudo meat substitute. Check out the 'pototoe flakes', yes folks you've come to the Irish section!
Once you've discovered some of the ingredients are very obscure,(tinned pumpkin or nonalcholic stout beer, anyone) then worked out what 1 and half cups of liquid and 4 cups diced potatoes actually is; you'll have long since given up and gone to the chippy.

I've been inspried to cook exactly ZERO recipes.

It's the MacDs of Vegan cookbooks.
Save your money, save a tree.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only cook book you need, 29 Aug 2007
What a fantastic little book this is and you don't have to be vegan to enjoy the recipes because they are great as they are. My husband loves the chilli recipe and I can't make enough of it for him. And what a great idea to make shepherd's pie and lasagne in a slow cooker. I would never have even thought of that. The desserts are delicious too.

If you love having more time and to yourself and eating really healthy and tasty meals, then this is the book you need. It's full of receipes from around the world that you can just prepare, throw into the slow cooker and leave to cook all day. I just go to work after setting up the slow cooker and come home to a delicious smell and a meal that's cooked itself. Even on the weekends it's handy so that I don't have to waste my free time cooking. We just set up the slow cooker in the morning and leave it for the rest of the day. And when we have guests we can cook up enough food to satisfy even the biggest appetite. (And what's left over from one meal, makes great pie filling for another).

2.0 out of 5 stars not great
I agree with the previous reviewer. I have cooked one thing from this - stuffed cabbage leaves, mainly because the receipes seem pretty complicated and, as the previous review... Read more
