5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Great!, 14 Feb 2004
By Gary Hardman (Bolton, Greater Manchester United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Summary: Practical, informative and fun!

If, like me you have ever felt an urge to play the flute, but never never felt you could justify spending several hundred pounds on a 'real' one; this is the book for you!

The Authur provides all the information necessary for you to make your own flutes from cheap and readily available materials.
The book also contains invaluable information and help on the techniques required to blow your first note, and the fingerings you need to be able to play a scale.

Detailed instructions are provided to make the 'plumbers Pipe', which is very simply constructed from plastic tubing, which is readily available from any D.I.Y. store. I made my First 'Plumbers Pipe' in less than two hours, and played my first notes within minutes of finishing It!

In conclusion: the book is well laid out, easily understood and the authors freindly, lighthearted style makes reading it a pleasure.

1.0 out of 5 stars A total waste of money, 24 Feb 2007
This book is a total waste of money - The book does little to amplify the same information that is freely available on the internet. I bought it because I cannot play any instrument, but would like to learn to play something, and would like to make an instrument. The book hasn't helped me at all in either respect. I made the "plumbers flute" precisely as described in the book and couldn't get one single solitary note from it - despite hours of trying different mouth and lip positions. The book is simply not worth the money - it has only 44 pages - is highly repetitive - poorly illustrated and is unsuitable for novices like myself who cannot understand music notation and theory much less tune an instrument. Dont buy it!
